Thread: 997c question

The water column is the distance from the boat to the bottom. The water column will get "wider" as you go over a drop off into deeper water.. You can also see the depth changes/shadows in the area that you are scanning.. In the pic below, look for the trees laying down "across" the old creek channel. The shadow (blocked signal of the "lay downs" lets you know that the trees are not resting completely on the bottom.. Look to the left side of the picture. That dark area is an old slough (deeper water) running alongside the creek. Look at the creek channel (water column) where my boat crossed the creek channel at the top and bottom in the center of the pic. You will see how the water column (depth) changes as the boat goes over the creek channel (gets wider)... Hope this helps..

Notice how the contour changes on the 2D correspond to the width of the dark middle band of the SI.

Thanks for the pics Ranger690! I like how you split the screen so we could actually see the countour of the bottom. That helps me alot to understand the SI.
How accurate is the cursur and GPS to pick up a brushpile way off to the side? If I had to, I could use my handheld Garmin to go to it.

THe 997 GPS is just as accurate as my Garmin 176. The complaints you see on the internet about the 997 GPS is only concerning the refresh rate of the icon. As you slowly creep up on the marked point, the cursor will lag behind your actual progress and you see the boat icon turning. It can see where it would be a little frustratiing if you were constantly slow crawling, but for me it has not been an issue.

Marking a spot way off to the side has worked for me. The waypoint that you saved has been right on.

As I have said before, if I lost my 997 today. There would be another one here next week. The SI feature is amazing and addictive. Like getting hooked on spying and treasure hunting at the same time.
