I use the green ones from BPS about $15 each I place them about 12 ft apart and 2 ft down and fish the edges of the light. course I could be doing it wrong, but it does OK for me. That's from a dock, but I'd do the same from my boat

I use a 4' light on each end of the boat, hanging vertically with about 2" of the light sticking out of the water to illuminate the rod tips. We usually fish on the same side of the boat as the lights.

I have 2 greens lights on each end of the boat and a white one that floats in the middle. Does well for me.

I am fairly new to this type of fishing, just got the hand of it last year. I always use on green light in the middle of the boat, with just enought weight to hold the entire light under the water. Wat 45 min to an hour for baitfish to come, and fish anywhere you want. Usually fish a float and minnow around outer edge of light, and drop a couple straight down under the boat from 5' to 20'. Every time out three guys fished with only one light and always caught fish. You have to pay attention, after a while the baitfish will leave, and so will the crappie. Move to another location, and start over. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!

I use both white and green lights. Some swear by one, others by the other. I'm not sure it really matters. Also, a tip i learned on crappie.com was to paint the tips of your rods white, makes it a lot easier to see them at night under low light conditions.
