I had to make that jump to use the newer gps puck with built in compass on my 898 hdsi. Other than that, was happy with 6.4xx or what ever it was..
Every time I come up with a great idea, I get into trouble.
I am currently running software version 6.740 on my 998 hdsi. I'm wondering if I should update to the newest version (7.670)? Is it even safe to make a jump from such a old software version to the latest? I only use the unit for side imaging, 2d and gps mapping and I have no intention to ever use 360 or Ipilot. I'm getting ready to purchase a lake master plus map card so that has me wondering if I should upgrade. Any suggestions would be great

It is fine with skipping software versions and going to the latest ...
HB always recommends the latest version for your unit ...

There are two versions beyond version 6.74; version 7.51 and 7.67. The most significant change in 7.51 is adding Jigging Mode for SI units which is a feature carried even through the Helix SI models. Jigging Mode is an option under 2D Express menu that changes the pinging sequence allowing for "better" 2D performance by omitting a left and right SI ping in the sequence. Version 7.67 corrects a bug in the 7.51 software for TWR data (tracks, waypoints, routes). I currently use 7.67 on both 998 and 1198 and prefer the Jigging Mode option. As Rickie mentions, it is normally recommended to use latest version unless there is a known problem. You can skip versions because latest version has all previous enhancements and latest corrections. You can also load 7.67 and try it then reload 6.74 if not happy with the 7.67 version. BTW, 6.74 was the last change that affected settings for LKM. The software descriptions for these versions are also under the Software FAQs on Humminbird website.
i have heard before though that some of the older software versions are better at 2d imaging than some of the newer versions as far as picture quality wise. That's why I have not updated lately
I don't know about your 998 but I will never do another software update on any of my units. Ruined my new Helix 10 and can't go back to original software
This is due what ez mentions about the "Jigging Mode" feature fix ...
The Ping sequence was changed at 6.5xx to enhance the SI Imaging feature by allowing more pings in SI (thereby reducing the 2d pings) ... Which caused a noticeable degradation in the 2d sonar display ...
"Jigging Mode" was added (7.510) to the SI units to allow the user to change the Ping sequence back to before the Ping sequence change that enhanced SI imaging ...
So software versions older than 6.5xx had good 2d - versions after 7.510 have the option to have good 2d (by selecting "Jigging Mode")...
Versions between 6.5xx and 7.510 have better SI = but "less good" 2d ...
