You can do just that on the Helix models...clear all the side readings so you have your 2d or imaging w/o the clutter
when I've tried that there are still empty white boxes

    Zippy,
You have to go into the Sonar menus and toggle the SI Readouts menu.

Thanks to everyone for their input. Please forgive me if I still feel that if other companies that do not have a distracting white strip down the side of an expensive screen can do it ,So Can Humminbird. Any company that makes quality units with the innovations that Humminbird has, could come up with, and design a depth finder without taking up about an inch of the screen . All of the other manufacturers superimpose their data without the use of a white strip. Humminbird makes GREAT depth finders and does no need my endorsement. I chose Lowrance a couple of years and this was one of my hang ups. I wonder how many others chose some other manufactures product for the same reason. Humminbird and Lowrance are both great depth finders and offer some good choices. I really like the new units from Garmin so I hope that these comments do not show any bias. You have to make your decisions based on your particular needs and wants .......Good fishing......... whenever we get to go..........crappie1133

The new Humminbird units don't have this issue. It's been fixed. Yes Garmin products are nice and now affordable.

The Onix, Ion, and Helix. I suspect everything else to be Legacy units sometime soon. It would cost too much to rewrite software for the older units. In SI your returns come in at the top first so most find it not to be a problem at the bottom. It is nice to be able to turn it off though.

Was just playing with an 899 and was able to turn off the readouts. No depth, temp speed etc but a completely open screen side to side.
