Thread: Duracell AGM marine batteries

Didn't even know Duracell made marine batteries. If they're as good as their regular batteries they should be good.

Like any other battery, look at the reserve power, CCA (if you're going to use it as a starter), and replacement warranty.

Lately, I've been impressed with the Sears PM1 (trolling) and PM2 (starting battery). The PM2 is one of the few AGM's out there with the CCA's to turn my Merc 225. Used it a year now and everything's good so far. I've had Deka and Discover AGM's for comparison--both good batteries.

They are made by East Penn and just labelled as Duracell for Sam's. They are the same battery as the Deka Marine Master.

I don't really consider AGMs to be an upgrade. They are heavier and more expensive than equal performance flooded cells, and the extended life seldom makes up for the extra cost. The only clear and useful advantage they have for boat use is that they are much more tolerant of abuse and neglect than flooded cells.

Boats traveling thru big waves can really jostle a battery around and boy they take a pounding. I think AGM has an advantage there. You wont get the terminal corrosion from the acid or fumes escaping from the flooded cell batteries. I made the plunge a couple years ago on the sears pm1, and I am amazed at how I long I can troll with them. Quite salty...so not sure about payback period...haven't had them long enough to know. I am hoping for a long life if maintained properly. I pretty much take to heart everything catfan says about batteries, even if he is misguided on basketball teams he supports, lol.

This is important to me; I hate screwing with batteries. I plug 'em in when I get home and forget about them until I go out again. My Discovers have now gone through 6 seasons and I'm starting my 7th. 36 volt system and I'm on the water 30-40 times a year, if that helps.
