Went to the Elite 7 from a HB 798, major difference in scene. You wont be disappointed in the Elite 7, uch brighter too in the sunlite.
I was looking for the detail on the bottom i.e. brush holding fish, etc. and GPS is not really needed as I have a handheld.
It appears as though the elite 7x gives you both benefits of sonar plus down scan $550
But looking on PB sale cat. they have an HB with down imaging plus sonar $400...do they compare?
Yes I know the HB screen is smaller on the 596c HD DI.
But for a novice who fishes mostly less than 40 ft water on small lakes and pits...which one?
thanks for the help in advance

I have to agree with Rees. I don't think they can be compared. The 596 doesn't even have GPS. The elite-7 has a 7" screen, GPS, 2D, DS, and it can use NMEA 2000 network to share waypoints, and use external GPS sources.
Sonar without GPS is kind of like having a sonar unit without a boat, IMO. I did the handheld thing in the early days, but it can be a pain, and slow. In april you could add a new GPS puck with heading and 10 X per second refresh. You want to hold on brush and waypoints, welcome to being able to do it with precision!
