Default questions about lowrance Mark 5, elite 5 or humminbird 300 series

Here is what I'm looking for:

    4-5" screen

    read depth and temp

ability to see (don't need greatdetail) brush piles

    I don't need GPS as I have Garmin w/waypoints

    Don't need color screen

So anybody have any experience with any of the above? If so best guess for a choice for what I need?

WHich one would be best for sitting over brush piles? Should I look at down imaging or would straight sonar be enough...what you get vs dollars?

thanks in advance...going to BP tomorrow to look but need a start

I have a Mark 5 pro dual beam, don't have many hours of play time with it yet as installed late last year, but it works for me . I long line and it shows the structure pretty good, but not like DI will. BPS has 'em for $200 right now, something to consider. It shows structure better than the old x37 I had, a bit more detail. Suggest you go to BPS/Cabelas/Gander Mtn where they have 'em on display and play with 'em, see which one you like, can operate easily and afford.
    GO BIG ORANGE !

I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.

I think hummingbird has a monochrome unit that has both 2d and DI pretty reasonable. Same as Jimp said about looking at them in the store.

For ~ $160 you can get this : Lowrance Mark-5x Fishfinder

    5" screen
480x480 pixels = pretty sharp image for a 2d unit
    60deg cone coverage
    temp display

    $20 rebate during March

Just for clarification ... no, I do not have this unit. But, if you're not really looking to get into Down Image units, or their price range, then this unit may be all that you need.

I've got the 570 and enjoy it. I don't think I would like to only have the DI. Having the dual beam 2D is crucial, IMO.

Default back from BP more confused

Just got back from BP and am more confused...they tried to sell me a garmin echo 200: 480x300 pixels, 2400 watts, dual beam at $160. They said the increased watts 2400 vs 2000 is more important than the HB 640x640 vs garmin 480x300?
Since I don't know anything about Garmin units (however I like their GPS hand helds) wasn't sure if they were just trying to sell that particular unit that day.
So the comparison is Garmin..smaller screen, 2400 watts, 480x300 pixels, dual beam vs HB 570 larger screen, 2000 watts, 640x640

    any comments?

You must have talked to the Janitor
The pixel count is what give you the screen reselotion or picture. More pixels beter picture. 400 wats you would never notice any difference. dont know anything about Garmin performance but have never seen one in the store or on some of the fishing shows where the show one on a boat that i liked the display on, always looked kinda cheesy to me compared to HB or LOwrance. Just my 2cents.

Default thats why this web site is such a help

well, you know BP...they had kids working there and one of them told me the watts are what provide the clearity...the example he used was 2400 watts would show a fish close to the bottom better than a finder with 2000!

this points up the reason why guys like me rely on web sites like this one....sales people will apparently tell you anything!

    thanks Charlie

I should have known better: reminds me of a story...I used to do the western fire scene to make extra money after I retired so I was out in Oregon working a fire with a college kid. Jobs for the locals were hard to find and they kept coming into camp asking if we had any, which we didn't. However, when they asked the "kid" he said sure, just go over to the furthest tent and apply. I asked him "why did you tell that man we had jobs when you know we didn't?" he looked at me in all sincerity and said "because thats what he wanted to hear"...enough said!

Guess I will look at the HB 570!
