heres some good reading............ GPS Accuracy - How Accurate is it?
I have down imaging and am satisfied with it.
I have down imaging and wish I had side imaging.
I have side imaging
I have standard sonar and am satisfied with it.
Sonar...I don't need no stinkin sonar. I am the fish whisperer.
The "HB Donut" is definately an inconvenience for some that move at speeds below 0.6mph.... (Some find the "Donut" as a major point in brand decision)...
There are some valid points to add here (for clarification regarding the "Donut).. :
*The "Donut" is not a flaw in the HB unit (it is working as designed)..
*The "Donut" only appears at speeds below 0.6mph...
*The "Donut" continues to move on the chart view screen as the boat moves (just at 5-6 second intervals)...
*The "Donut" does not affect the accuracy of the waypoints in the unit...
*The automatic rotating of the chart in the "Course Up" setting can be eleviated by changing the setting to "North Up".. (I think someone mentioned this)...
Boat tracking on the HB chart view is not impossible with the "Donut"...just inconvenient...(for some)...

Kosmo, I stand corrected. I've not experienced the "lines" very often myself most likely due to fishing the same cove/creek area that I'm already extremely familliar with, thus I mainly use down scan and 2d. Researching Dr Depths website this morning, I came across the following and found it to be interesting.
DrDepth - R&D
It seems that Lowrances LSS-1 setup tends to overlap/interfere to a point, not so much that it would turn me away from the product as I feel the HDS-8 is one heck of a system. But I'm considering doing my own mapping of the areas I like to fish vs. spending money on maps I'll never use.
I'm leaning towards purchasing the Dr Depth and all the goodies that come with it. It looks to be a nice little hobby with a few rewards for the time and effort.
Again, those shadows....I stand corrected.

Info onblack bars.
The transmit radiation pattern for the Lowrance transducers will be as depicted by the red curve in the chart above, showing one side of the cross track beam pattern. The big ripples in the beam pattern near the 90 degree region (down) are caused by the downscan crystal interference with the side looking crystal. The interference diminishes as you approach 0 degrees (side). This interference causes the striped appearance we see in the Lowrance sidescan images. Via algorithms, Lowrance varies the amount of signal which is processed from each crystal with depth to minimize this interference. In simplified terms this involves the use of varied fan angles for each beam. When you see blocks of blank area, signal conversion is changing rapidly and the processors are temporarily overloaded in an attempt to minimize interference.
Is there a ghost in here ...??
I'm showing Jim's last post as 2-14-2012 ... But yet showed up in the recent thread postings as if someone added a new post...
