Here are a few I picked up in my trip out yesterday.
The original screenshot from my little Lowrance unit are on the left.
My interpretations and comments are supperimposed on the original image on the right.
As a reminder, sonar signals are bounced from the transducer to the bottom and back and fish are shown as "fish arches" because of how the signals are reflected back to the transducer. If you have a traditional sonar, you're probably using 200khz signals. My Elite 5dsi uses 455 & 800. The lower the frequency (455khz on the right side of the screenshot below), the larger the arch. The highter the freqency (800khz on the left side of screenshot), the smaller and more accurate the depiction of size of fish.
Here's a nice screenshot of some suspended fish I found as I was leaving a cove. Notice the false echo on the 455khz and not shown on the 800khz? I thought it was fish suspended on a tree at first until the 800khz cleaned up the image.

Notice the fish nested in the trees and the depth they are showing up. (455khz on right, 800khz on left)

This is just off a major marina at my home lake where a lot of tournament fish are released after the tournament. With all of the fish being turned loose at the ramp......it's got a lot of potential. I'm quite surprised to see fish so deep in 61-62 degree water though. It's awfully early for that.

    Note to users...

The short vertical dashed lines in images above have been confirmed by Dr. Sonar as "sonar noise" (specialist for Lowrance). I have the noise rejection turned on but I get these vertical lines from time to time and I just ignore them.

Anybody have any idea why Lowrance discontinued the Elite 5 DSI ... instead of keeping it & discontinuing the Elite 4 series ??? I wonder if the comparable HB's having 2d capability, forced them to drop the E5DSI & bring out the E5HDI ??

The E5DSI has a map card slot, in which you can place a 2GB blank micro-sd card for use in taking screenshots, or you can purchase a compatible Navionics or Fishing Hotspots card. The map cards come by region, so it depends on what state(s) you fish in as to what map(s) you would need. Check the available lakes on whatever brand map card you choose, so as to make sure all the lakes you'll be fishing are covered on the card.

The map card & blank card cannot be in the unit at the same time, since there's only one card slot available. The lake layout is shown on the base map as a blue area ... and there are some few lakes that have a few contours on them.

I chose not to purchase a map card, because I'm not (yet) into doing a lot of contour following (like in spider rigging, longline trolling, etc). I did, however, want to take screenshots & show them here, so I purchased a 2GB blank micro-sd card, card adapter, & (USB Flash Drive) reader for ~$8 .... as I do not have a sd card reader on my computer. Here's what I got ---- 2GB microSD Secure Digital TransFlash Card with Reader (BMZ-C)

I take it you've decided to go ahead & get the unit, in spite of it being a discontinued model. Now you'll want to read through this sticky & check out some of the links provided, and the graphs & pics that explain the workings & capabilities.

I have mine mounted on the trolling motor, and was lucky enough to have received the mounting sleeve in the package deal I made with the member that sold me the unit. I believe this mounting sleeve now comes packaged with the unit. That's a $20+ savings, if you intend to mount yours on the TM.

Unfortunately, that particular card/reader is no longer available, but you can still get the micro-sd card, adapter card, and a reader for near the same money. You may just have to do a little shopping around to find some place that offers them ... or, since you have a reader, just get the micro-sd card & adapter. And you won't need the card to update the unit, since the unit will likely already have the updated software version installed. Your card will allow you to take screenshots, though, and that can prove very useful in showing what you're seeing on the unit, in the event there's a problem or if you just want some advice on settings tweaks.

One thing you will want to do, is to print out the Operations Manual from this link : http://www.lowrance.com/Root/Lowranc...0153-001_w.pdf ... because the "instructions" papers that come with the unit are mostly skewed towards the installation of the unit & transducer, and don't really show you much about how it operates.

And, of course, ask any questions you have ... right here ... and we'll try & guide you along to getting the best performance out of it. And don't worry about how trivial your questions may seem to you, as the answers may be beneficial to all who already have the unit or are considering getting it.

I want to say ty for all the help. I will have many Question I am sure in the later. For this is my first unit like this I am going froma Lowrance x85 to this so as you can see its a LONG LONG jump.
