    Default Which GPS to buy

OK, I admit it. I screwed up when I bought my HB 796HD DI. I should have spent the extra $100 and got the one with the GPS built in, but Cabellas didn't have that one in stock that day and the money was burning a hole in my pocket. So now I need to buy a separate GPS to install on my boat (most likely handheld). Any suggestions out there that's not going to cost my my left n*t? I want one that I can get lake maps on, mark the different way points, etc. I've got a garmin for the car that I am using know, but I can't mark any way points on it.

I have had the Garmin GPSMAP60SXc for several years- it is still going strong after a lot of use and abuse. The replacement/upgrade to it is the Garmin GPSMAP 62S:

Garmin GPSMAP 62S GPS with Sensors at The GPS Store

Garmin has taken the popular GPSMAP 60Csx GPS and overhauled and the result is the sophisticated GPSMAP 62s. Garmin has kept the rugged, compact design of the 60 series units and added more up to date features. The housing is durable and waterproof to IPX7 standards and the rubber grip on the side assures a firm hold. The generous 2.6” color display is a high resolution, sunlight viewable screen perfect in any outdoor condition. The internal GPS antenna is a high sensitivity powerhouse with HotFix technology to make sure the GPSMAP 62s has fast acquisition times and unparalled satellite tracking.

Garmin has kept the popular electronic sensors in the GPSMAP 62s, the barometric altimeter for accurate elevation data and an electronic compass that displays an accurate heading while standing still. Not only does the Garmin 62s have a microSD card slot but it comes with 1.7GB of internal storage for downloading detailed maps from their Mapsource CD and DVD library. The microSD card slot makes it quick and easy to add detailed maps to the GPSMAP 62s as most of Garmin’s popular Mapsource titles are also available preloaded to microSD. The Garmin BirdsEye satellite imagery is compatible with the Garmin 62 series so with your subscription you can add aerial satellite photos for exceptional detail. You can even use the Garmin Custom Maps software to import your own custom maps into the Garmin 62s.

The GPSMAP 62s is an advanced handheld GPS that can help any hunter, hiker, boater or geocacher navigate safely. Using just two AA batteries for up to 20 hours of battery life the 62 will remain lightweight and proved ample usage time. Wireless exchange lets you send and receive waypoints, routes, tracks and geocaches between compatible Garmin units with the need for any messy cables. The GPSMAP 62s is a high performance handheld GPS unit that should accompany you on any outdoor adventure.

Hey Don G ,I have a Garmin 431 on my boat also, next to my 1198si. don't have any maps for the 1198 yet, do you have them for your HB ? or do you just use the Garmin, Thinking about getting the south maps for the 1198 but really don't know if I need to spent the money for something I may not need if the Garmin gives me more than the hotmaps ???? Garmin all the way, I have had a 76Cx for a while now. Wouldn't leave home without it even though I have GPS on my Hbird.
