Default No tail and thin tail grubs rule!! Look Ma, no mold!

The above can be made without a mold. The top two to the right use a mold; the others don't. Comparing these designs to curly tail and shad tail grubs, there is no contest, especially when using a float. All size fish attack these on a slow retrieve. The secret is also using soft plastic vs medium soft. The other design I came up with over ten years ago is also a slam dunk for less active fish:

    Again - no mold needed.

The key to catching fish with these lures over other types is tail and body quiver unique to each and apart from other designs. Today there was a slight chop on the water and both worked great under a float in 8'. When I started getting some action in 3.5', I switched from a 1/16 oz jig to a 1/32 oz and upped my catch rage by 75%. The key was slowing the retrieve within the first few feet of the splash the lure made and BANG - HOOK UP! - one after the other under a bright blue sky.

    Just remember a few things:
    1. 4-6 lb test line for best lure action when rigging them on light jig heads. Braid is okay as long as it doesn't inhibit casting distance and when used with mono or fluorocarbon leaders of that test.
    2. slow retrieves with slight rod handle / rod tip changes in lure speed along with pauses along lure's the entire path. I've had fish hit many times on the same retrieve or hit again after recasting to the same spot. Once a fish is provoked, it's dander is up and won't rest until it clobbers that lure.
    3. be ready for line jumps or felt bumps
    4. when the strike is felt, raise the rod to to allow the fish to hook itself and then retrieve fast with the rod tip pulled to one side and then the other. The fish will most likely stay hooked with a final small hook set.
    5. on windy days, the float works great as long as you pull the float towards you a bit at a time with pauses, which allows the bobbing float to add to the lure's magical action resulting in fish pulling it down. Love it!!! Love it!!! Love it!!!
    6. Lighter jig heads are better for shallow water under 5'; 1/8 oz. good for long casts and deeper water. I use unpainted ball head jigs because the visual emphasis should be on the lure's body & tail action. Look down in the water to see what I'm talking about and you'll see why the finesse design excels.

Don't be surprised to get bass and other species on these. Yesterday I caught three bass - the largest only 14" - and five pickerel. Many of the sunfish were no bigger than my middle finger!

Thanks. Amazing how I always believed that curl tails and other action tails were necessary to catching fish, especially those capable when using very slow retrieves. But what I've discovered is that a lure that has a greater effective speed range will outproduce any other lure most of the time, assuming fish are for the most part inactive and suspending. The ice cream cone and the club shaped grubs shown, using soft plastic, have proven to be my best grubs ever alongside the flat straight tail that flutters regardless of imparted action. Anglers watching me catch fish after fish must wonder - what the H is he using?!!!

    I'll never tell! LOL
