    Smile Millwood Lake Underwater structures

A guy from La. at Toledo Bend Lake told me how he placed plastic 40 gal. drums with different size holes and 5 gal. buckets with a large pvc pipe with holes in it and cemented them to form a christmas tree after you assemble them on the water. He said he formed a square of about a 100 feet and placing gravel in parts of buckets to form beds for bluegill and bream.

It sounds great, so I said I was going to do that also, but I first went to the Corps of Engineer office by the dam and spoke to the lake manager. He told me that any type of plastic inserted into the lake was illegal. Brush, trees, logs and natural materials was okay with him. If I was caught or seem by the game and fish or rangers that I would be fined and arrested for endangering the environment and polluting the lake.

He did make it a point about the plastic or other illegal type materials, but they did encouraged building natural structures for fishing. I am going to stick with the trees, logs and brush, but I do bait area,s also using a container I can retrieve and refill---Burlap sacks work great, the farmers co-op sells them for about a $1.40 a piece--you can cut them and make 2-3 smaller sacks.

This time of year during drawdown I like exploring for old lures and such. While on these walks I always gather brush from along the waters summer pool level and make piles. No blocks or other weight is needed if you use brush that is usually under water anyhow. is already waterlogged and will staywhere you put it. Around here they pull the water down at least 5 ft, so what ever you build will be 5 ft deep come spring. I also do the same on the ice once safe enough. On ice I may wire them together to keep them together as they fall to through the ice. They can't say much if you use brush that is already in the lake.

I've talked to different lake managers here in Arkansas and get varying opinions about structures. All agree that their placement should not cause a boating hazard at low water levels. I, personally don't see a problem with using good clean PVC structures as the Corp of Engineers ,themselves, use them for river channel bouys.
One thing that I hate to see is guys using old hydrolic oil buckets to weight down brushpiles. I, personally, only use icing buckets from bakeries.
I have several PVC structures out but my best "slab" producers have always been good old manmade brushpiles!

    Hey Speck.

My wife just walked into the room, read what I was reading; and asked
if you could tie me - to one of those heavy weighted brush piles over at EF?
"You guys kinda think she's tired of me going fishing, or some'thin?"

    Be safe all!

i fish a corps of engineers lake in eastern ky and have talked to them about putting out crappie structure. the woman i talked to was the head honcho for the county where i fish. she not only liked the idea of bamboo condos she gave me a permit to place structure for a year just in case the dnr caught me dropping the stuff in the lake. i call her at the beginning of each year and she sends me another permit.

I told my fishing partner if I fall in during one of our winter trip on EF to mark the spot and come back and fish it later. Maybe we could do the same with you?:D
And I know my wife thinks the same of me.

I've used them after washing clean with hot soapy water.
