    Default Advise on artifical structure

Thanks guys for all the welcome aboards, Fished murray alot in my young teen age years with my grandpa he was pretty good at cathing fish mostly large mouths and a few crappie. He taught me all the basics now that I am older it seems fishing is tougher now thirty years later. I am wanting to try to start crappie fishing at murray no luck yet. Reading different web sites about making artifical structure seems to have advantages to catching crappie. I want to make some cane, pvc condos, trees, pvc ,ect... but just wondering on advice as to where to sink them for the very best all season fishing; example middle of coves in different depths , around islands, points, rocky places, creek channels, on banks where and what depth at these places. Any advise will be appreciated.

ALOT of VERY good advice here on ALL these threads, would personally suggest a mix of different types (cedar with other hardwood branches, bamboo and stakes, ect) in sets of 5- 10 each, both shallow to deep and at contours (all same depth) on KNOWN spring areas, transition zones (where bottom type changes to another type- mud to gravel, ect), old stream/ river channels, submerged bridge embuttments, building foundations, old culerts under roads, rock outcroppings, stump fields, steeper slopes of inflowing streams, and where allowed under floating docks. Would suggest spend some time talking to old timers who knew the lay of the area now flooded, also check for old county/ Corps of Engineers survey maps- these CAN be GOLD MINES of valueable info!!! Lastly, not to be a "kill joy" but check with your local game warden as far as your state`s policy on placement, some don`t care, SOME are positively ANAL and won`t allow this without meeting some very strict requirements. Checking DOESN`T hurt, and can avoid any "Imperial entanglements"...welcome to the elite; the "few" improving the fishing for the majority... good luck, BE SAFE, and BOMBS AWAY!!!

Good advise from Lowell. On my lake I was able to contact the corp office and get a special use permit to cut specific species of trees and make brush piles. The permit was free and easy to obtain. I had no idea such a permit was available and I would bet that a lot of lakes offer this type of permit.

What many persons do not realize is buerocracy is meant to serve US, the end user (and VOTERS). With all the budget cuts, downsizing and all that, if a private citizen or group approaches these various state and federal agencies and offers to add cover in a responsible manner in APPROVED places, most of those same said agencies are willing to allow it, so long as you follow their requirements. Besides, some of the same personnel in those agencies FISH...
