I think pulling jigs with the kids is really easy and gives the best chance for keeping them having fun. Some tangles when we catch but they're usually still messing with the fish while I get everything reset. Works good for us.

Good chance at 'accidental species' too. Okay, because it keeps them busy. Although the little one at the end said, "Can we do a crappie video now?" ha

Easy enough for them to pretty much do it by themselves..that's fun!

Be versatile at what you do when crappie fishing. Some days spider rigging will catch tons of big fish, some days a single pole will outdue 8. Its all about fishing in your comfort zone, and enjoying what your doing. If you don't have confidence, your not going to have fun.
Plan for different situations, know where your gonna fish, how your going to do it. Is being a game plan eliminates a lot time and frustration.Name: uploadfromtaptalk1434406339781.jpg

Hmm.... Best Advice.... Keep after 'em and don't be afraid of change.

I came back to crappie fishing after an eleven year binge built on fly fishing for everything that swims, and traditional bowhunting.

In 2009, I bought the boat that I'll likely have the rest of my life. I set it up to be as fly fisher friendly as possible, in excess of what I could afford. Clean decks and rails are very necessary for fly fishing, so I avoided anything that might 'get in the way'.
Fast forward to the present day and my daily visits to crappie.com: I wanted to learn every technique possible to catch crappie from the boat. I now have tite-lock rod holders clamped on the front of the boat for pushing jigs (not crazy about them, as reaching to get them to set the hook is a pain), and four trolling style rod holders spread around the back end and sides of the boat for pulling jigs and crankbaits. Heck, I even decided to put a depth finder with GPS (to track my speed), and a new trolling motor (to control my speed) on the boat this year. All of these changes have gotten me into more crappies than I could have ever imagined before.

Moral of the story and best advice I can give: Stay after 'em and don't be afraid of change.

Best advice you can get when starting out crappie fishing is to ask around or view forums like crappie.com for information about where the crappie are. You can catch them from the bank or boat but you need to know they are in the lake before you go. Also have all your tackle with you just in case the crappie want different colors or bait. Get some minnows as well to entice a better bite if they are not liking jigs. Sit back and have fun!

Start out fishing with one rod and then move on to using more than one.
