Since we didn't do that well Tuesday on Da Bayou we, my bride, my grandson and myself, decided to try and repeat last Thursdays trip on Da River targeting cats and sacalait. Launched at a crowded Madisonville bridge launch at 8:30. Water temp 88 F and raising tide. Trolled out from the launch and caught 25 blue cats within 2 hours. Mind you they were not monsters but they fry up real nice. When the bite stopped there we decided to head north and see if the if any sacalait wanted to join the "Ice Chest Team". Hit a few lay downs and ended up with 9 keeper sacs and 4 more much bigger cats. My Grandson and I cooled off unexpectedly when my trolling motor hit a stump and the boat stopped so suddenly that we both went into Da River. My wife heard the splash and was surprised when she turned around to find out that she was The Captain of Bon Temps at least till we could climb back into the boat. Austin caught his PBE white sacalait, a 13 1/2 inch beauty. My sacalait measuring device only goes to 13 inches and it was busting out over the top of it. He thought he had gotten hooked on a snag till the big sacalait jerked his pole hard as it headed towards deeper water. All cats caught on dead shrimp at about 25 to 28 feet down in 35 feet of water. Sacalait caught on Bobby Garland baby shad the electric chicken and the chrome color.
Lessons learned today: Don' troll at high speeds close to the bank unless you want to enter the water unexpectedly and when you think you are snagged on a lay down maybe you ain't !!
Bon Temps !!
