Over 40 years ago, Charlie Brewer sat down at his kitchen table and started making lures. Little did he know that the lures he was designing were going to change how anglers approached fishing. Later, Charlie would write a book titled Slider Fishin' about his finesse style of fishing and complete line of fishing lures.
In the beginning, Charlie named his lure company Crazy Head Lure Company because of the unique and crazy looking jig head design. Then in 1984, Charlie Brewer Jr., Charlie's son bought the company and officially changed the name to Charlie Brewer's Slider Company.
One of Charlie's biggest achievements was designing and producing the Weedless Crappie Slider. "We were displeased with the nuisance and aggravation of hanging-up regularly. The crappie were located in heavy cover-brush and sunken treetops. Our open-hooks had to be worked in the heavy cover in order to catch crappie. And it seemed impossible to work the exposed hook jigs without snagging up fairly often. This was costing us extra fish and costing us jigs and money. We lost around 20 or 25 crappie jigs that afternoon. On the way home that night, I decided we needed a weedless or snagless crappie jig. I had never seen or heard of one being on the market. In my workshop, that night and the next morning, I handmade several weedless crappie jigs that I thought would work. My buddy and I returned to the lake that afternoon to give them a try.We fished the same number of hours , the conditions seemed to be the same and we fished the same snag full structures. The results-we boated 67 crappie and only lost two jigs!" said Charlie in a quote taken from his article Crappie Fishing with the Weedless Crappie Slider.
Not surprisingly, the Weedless Crappie Slider became extremely popular with crappie anglers everywhere. Of course being weedless was one of the keys to success when fishing Weedless Crappie Slider. Charlie noted that even if the tiniest bit of hookpoint were exposed the lure would not be weedless and quickly get snagged.
The Weedless Crappie Slider (www.Sliderfishing.com) is made up of two products. A small 1 1/2-inch soft vibra-tail Grub designed to vibrate or wiggle when slowly retrieved. The other part, a 1/16-ounce Charlie Brewer's Weedless Crappie Slider Head with an offset hook for Texas rigging andski-like-nose for getting through thick cover.
One recommendation Charlie had for crappie anglers was to use 4- to 6-pound fishing line. The smaller line size,he explained lets anglers cast light lures farther and is less visible to the crappie.
Another suggestion Charlie had was on setting the hook."The sensation of a crappie hit is like a tiny "peck"or "tick" on your bait. However, when you feel this slight signal from the crappie, set the hook instantly; do not hesitate. Be fast on the draw-so to speak. Waiting one or two seconds to set the hook, it seems, is too late," said Charlie.
Charlie Brewer's Weedless Crappie Slider can be fished several ways. First, the lure can be cast into cover and slowly retrieved. Second, the Crappie Slider can be cast out and retrieved slowly. For best results, count the lure down to just above the crappie before beginning to reel back in. Third, it can be vertically jigged. Fourth, it can be trolled slowly.
Lastly, Charlie noted, "Keep in mind that crappie are a great fish to school-up or hang together. Normally, when you locate one or two of them, there are usually many more atthe same place or close by. In addition, crappie are very depth minded. In other words, when one or two are caught, the entire school of them will be laying at about the same depth."
Technology has changed how and where crappie anglers fish, however, one thing that will never change is Charlie Brewer's Weedless Crappie Slider. "It's a winning combination that has been catching fish for years and years," said Charlie Brewer Jr. about the Weedless Crappie Slider.
