    Default Beaver Update

So I had a chance to get to Beaver Lake a few minutes from the house yesterday. While the boat ran perfectly last week it decided to be a little stubborn on Saturday. A quick plug change and a filter clean out and I was good to go. Frustrating when you only have a few short hours to play, but at least I got to go.

Ran the side scan a good bit in some areas I haven’t fished in 20 years. It took awhile but I located some small schools of fish that sure looked crappie-ish along some steep banks and bluff walls. All fish were near but not on brush. Like 50 feet away and suspended. 10-12 feet deep over 20 fow.

Now I have to say that I’m still pretty new at spider rigging and just learning the ropes, but Saturday was much better than my first few attempts. I hit spot lock 20 to 30 yards down wind of the fish I saw and got six rods in the water. I then slowly moved towards the fish and picked up a couple. Now that’s more like it! I finally felt like I was getting the hang of it.

In the short time I had I only managed a handful of fish but sure had fun. Water temp was 47 and there were a lot of folks on the water. Most probably caught more than me but that’s ok. Leaves room for improvement. Sorry the pics are sideways. Couldn’t get that figured out.

all fish were released. I’ll wait til I get a bit better at this and then start frying em up!

Nice read. It sounds like you see the coming of something pretty awesome. Trust me, it will be.
    Thanks for sharing.

I remember the first time I caught a few spider rigging, it's a great feeling. Great job!

Hey Greg thanks for the report. We also fished Beaver for a couple of hours Saturday and the area we were in was really crowded. I guess since it was such a nice day everybody had the same idea. Talked to several people and the results seemed fair at best. Even met a couple of livescopers with only one or two fish. however, we did meet one young man which was targeting solo's with livescope with decent results. We fished several brush piles and only found one or two takers per pile and some of those were short fish. Targeted some skinny water the crappie weren't there but the bass were in the shallow brush. Given the high water levels the fish appear to be really scattered and spider rigging is definetly an effective technique now.

Yeah there were some very crowded spots on Saturday. Seemed like everyone with a boat had it out. Like me . I had a local guy who catches a lot of crappie that provides some recent reports so I was specifically looking for fish in around 20 FOW. He also once told me to have the confidence to head for spots nobody was in. I’m typically in with the crowd but this time took a run several miles from the ramp and started side scanning the main channel. I found a few fish out there but the wind was a little high for my taste out in the middle. I’m definitely anticipating the next month being really good as long as the water stays relatively stable.

It’s good to get a report from Beaver. I was out on Beaver Saturday as well for about four hours. Never grabbed a pole but had a blast locating structure and marking it for future days. Felt good to be on the lake again.

How windy was it? I was out on Ouachita Friday and it was so windy that we had to stay up in a creek, out of the wind.

My buddy caught two smallmouths, rare for Ouachita.

Wind was up near 10-15 most of the time I was out there. I think I might have caught a few more fish if the wind had been a little calmer. My spider legs were bouncing a bit. This was the first time I’ve had my good electronics on the boat at Beaver and I was amazed at the structure I was able to locate. I too marked a bunch of it. I’m hoping to get back out there this week or weekend if the weather stays stable
