The Capps and Coleman Widowmakers are primarily for the hardcore dedicated spider-rigger and I think they can be called the "gold standard" in that respect. They can also be used for power trolling and longlining in front but I would not recommend them for pulling cranks.....get a set of black widows for that or do like we do and mount some "fish-on" holders on the rails in back. Our C&C's are set so that they don't have to be readjusted most of the time after taking a rod out but occasionally we will put enough pressure on it to require a readjustment....that is not a problem and takes less than 5 seconds. Our rodholders stay put wherever we move them and setting the rodtip the correct distance off the water is not a problem.....we do it automatically without thinking when we put the rod back into the holder. Adjustments are infinite and literally smooth as glass with these holders and take mere seconds. We have even pulled the rodholders back far enough to keep the jigs out of the water and put the boat on plane in order to move short distances on a fairly calm day and have not had a problem doing that. Meatgetter can show you the trick welds that make these holders the best out there. FYI, The holders shown in the pics have screw-in bases and I have always been leery of them from buying a set like that ten years ago. They had a tendency to "unscrew" on one side of the boat in anything more than a moderate wind and were a constant nightmare. Also, I am not saying the C&C's absolutely CAN'T be used for cranks, I just know that we would have to tighten up the ball considerably from the way we have them set if we were to do that but I think it would certainly be possible in a pinch. If I did pull cranks off the front a whole lot I would probably use a different setup. I hope this makes sense and doesn't sound confusing.....

Steve thanks for an unbiased review and clearing up the usefulness of the rod holders. Just what I wanted to know. That's the great thing is over time new stuff keeps being made and evolving. Just look at the rods we now use. Always appreciated!

J.W., I thought you also might be interested to know that we don't position our rodholders straight up......they are more like a 40-45 degree forward angle so that the butt end of the rods are at the very edge or even hanging over the cap of the boat. This does two things.....it gives us much more space up front and keeps us from constantly hitting the rod holders with our knees and it also puts the baits even further away from the boat, which is quite desirable especially when the fish are spooky. The C&C's are rock solid in this position whereas a lightweight central pylon supporting the weight of the poles at that extreme forward angle might have a tendency to be "bouncy" and thus decrease the advantage of even having a single rod system.

There were modifications that needed to be made to the original ones that will not be needed on these newest ones! I paid over 200 dollars just to have the mods made at a local metal working shop on my original set and these will no longer be necessary. It took a little bit of time to work the kinks out to make them perfect! Jerry will treat you right on a brand new set and they will be ready to roll when you get them!

    Default Elite rod holders

Hey Steve what mods did you make? If I get my rod holders any more out in front of me I am gonna need a stretch to lengthen my short fat rump lol.
What is the the new ability of the holders gonna have old ones didn't. Jerry has always done me good And wouldn't hesitate to buy from him. He has loaned me rods in past before I have bought them.

Jerry wanna lone me a new single rod holder hahahha. Just kidding I know that isn't possible.

There were a couple of tiny spot welds that were critical to making sure they stayed put and were stable. I had my black ones welded and then touched up so that they aren't noticeable. The new models should be good to go right out of the box.

Not sure if they are spot welding yet?? I did visit with the president of Tite-Loc at the championship this past weekend and they will in the future but that is a easy fix !!!!
