    Default loseing hooked fish

I know some of you have had fish hooked and fighting it back to boat and all of a sound you lose it,I know I have.I have offen wonder why I losted a fish that I thought was hooked pretty good. For the last few weeks I have been fishing clear water and love it.You can see the jig hit the surface and watch its fall rate, been useing solid white curly tails easy to see.Anyway I seen how they do it,thinking I had good one on and he is not getting off b/c I've done reeled him close to the boat and all at once they will fare their gills out REAL big and spit the lure out.I'm figureing the force of water being pulled in unhooks the jig to spit it out, seen this several times.Really its unreal how for out they can fare their gills out and when they close their gills its unreal how big their mouth can get. When they do this I'm trying to stop doing the cuss words b/ c now I know its not my fault or jigs fault.I'd almost bet they can spit a crankbait the same way.

I think they can shake a jig loose sometimes but it is usually after you tear a hole with the hook then the fish manages to get some slack. If I get one coming in I never let up, keep a bend in the pole and pull them in with no net. Some folks use a net but unless it is unusually large I put them in the boat and many times the hook falls free once they flop in the bottom of the boat. Sometimes they short strike and bartely gets hooked and in they case your just gonna loose a few.

I have seen too... many good fish get off as I lift them in the boat. I now have a long handle net waiting for them when they hit the top of the water. Can't tell you how many fish a good net has saved me...several of which come off during the fight but was able to lunge the net under them... or have the net under them as they popped off and net them before they swim away.

I use a net on bigger fish and lift the Waller fish. I toon every hook I use when I tie my rigs. Bend them out and you wont miss as many- and wont loose as many. Works for me. Ronnie Capps says he tunes every hook he ties.

At my groups spring camp at Grenada this year I tuned (bent out) all my jigs and after 4 days and 80 fish I had not lost but one or two and my buddies were talking about how many they had lost so I'm a believer.

I don't mine losing them after I get them on top of the water which happens or fall off in the boat atleast I got to see the fish out of the water. When they do this which is ok with me my cuss word is short but ehen I look down 2 or 3 feet and see the jig is in the roof of the mouth on a tight line and see it fare its gills and spit my cuss words are more aimed at the fish. They do it so fast it looks like the force of water they take in pulls them forward alittle ever interesting to see. They even get a curve in their tail when they fare the gills as to pull back before they spit.when they spit the jig its unreal how far out and wide the lips can get.Its the reason I said I bet they can do crankbaits the same way,I know I have losed them on crankbaits before and wondered why.

If I'm fishing in a tourney I'll have a net ready! But besides that I'm not that mad at them I'll give them a fighting chance. Just like nimrod said though when u lay the hook to them don't ever let up pull them strait in the boat. They will make it I've swung a ton of 2 pound + fish over the side.
