I've loaded the boat with crappie and bream from the same top along with a couple bass and a catfish
I was fishing one of my normal bunch of trees know for producing crappie, and catching nothing, no bites, nothing. Moved a couple hundred yards or more to a larger different bunch of trees, bam, bam, bam, hit after hit after hit, all bream. Finally caught one crappie and a white bass. My first thought was the crappie aren't in here, but now I wonder.... Usually when I catch crappie I only catch crappie and an occasional bass, one blue gill rarely.
Whatcha think?

They're all after the same food source and methinks it is not common to find them all in the same area, jockeying for position on that popsicle jig.

Usually when you find the bass, crappie aren't too far away. I usually find the larger crappie together and the smaller ones together as well.
This time of year, the crappie are usually tighter in the brush than the bream and bass.

When Crappiepro and I were fishing Friday, we noticed that almost every brush pile we pulled up on that we would catch 3 or 4 small crappie then after that we would start catching the slabs. I always thought that the little ones were younger and dumber and more aggressive. My stategy was to let CP clear out the dinkers before I moved in. He he.
It ain't nuttin but luck.
I have noticed when fishing deep tops in Lake Monticello that Crappie usually group together according to size. I have taken many videos there with the underwater camera and that is a notable characteristic that they all seem to be the same size at any particular area. I never see very small Crappie in a bunch with large Crappie. They also seem to bite generally with the largest first then smaller in a sort of "pecking order".
I use LM as an example because it is the only lake I fish over tops and honeyholes. On other lakes I troll and get a cross section of whats there. Trolling LM in other than winter months is a wasted effort.
