I have had Mercuries and hated them both. Had a yamaha 30hp 3-cylinder and LOVED it! I wanted a bigger boat, and Lowe had the floor layout that I wanted. And guess what, If I wanted a motor different than a mercury then it was gonna cost me 4+ grand plus. So I went and talked to a boat motor mechanic, and asked him which motor he worked on the most. He said Mercury 2-strokes. So i had my dobber down. I asked him the difference between 4-stroke yamaha and a 4-stroke mercury. He told me he culdnt tell a difference in what was coming in between the 2 name brands in a 4 stroke. And pretty much told me that neither yamaha or Mercury was having many problems with their 4-strokes. He also let me know that parts, fuel filters, pumps, etc were alot cheaper with the mercury. So I went with a mercury. Havent had any problems so far and have used my boat alot since I bought it in March. But I am scared to death of my Mercury and the first time something does happen to it im going to cry, but Im giving them benefit of a doubt this time. We'll see what happens. I sure wished I knew about Big River Marine at the time of my purchase, I hear about how great the customer satisfaction is with him. My next purchase will be thru him!
Had a mercury 4 stroke since 2004.........never had an issue in the least.
I've not seen many issues with any of the 4 strokes.
