    Default Berkley gulp....?

Hi, all! Just for fun read. So for the artificial purists out there, has anyone tried using Gulp worm (scented in liquid jar) or similar product for panfish. I know lots of bass guys using them on texas and other rig. There's no question that flies work for me, especially targeting the smaller green sunfish and bluegill, but want to explore other alternatives, since some JDM stuff quite expensive and hard to come by. Berkley gulps are very popular in Europe among the LRF folks using them on jigheads, dropshot, and a Russian-design rig called the Cheb rig (short for Cheburaska), which I've tried but with limited success, however it seems not too many posts on the subject at CDC ultralight sub-forum. Hope to learn different tactics. Cheers!Name: 20230810_084041.jpg

They catch fish but that stuff is an absolute mess. I have several lines of JDM plastics that have the scent infused into them and no mess. One that I use that fish grab on and won’t let go is the Cultiva Ring Kick Tail. The Grass Minnow, Fish Arrow are some others. Last I checked a lot of Gulp is sold in Japan too. I know a lot of folks that use it and have success but the smell and mess it makes caused me to move on.

    Regards

I’ve tried Gulp 1” minnows and they work but I don’t care for the small and mess .
Bought some worms and grubs but haven’t used them .
I was going to tip my jigs with them in the winter.
But I chose to go micro baits instead, flies and tiny plastics. The mini Trout Magnet works pretty good .

Your words painted very clear pictures, Sir Alpha...lol! I guess I'll also give the JDM stuff some serious consideration as well then.

One inch Gulp minnows on a drop shot with Owner size 8 Mosquito hook is absolute money. That's my go to when nothing else is really working. Thread it on up to the base of the hook rather than nose hook. VMC Spinshot size 8 works great, too, and is easier to rig. Not very messy if you compare them to real worms! Trout love them, too.

    Default Berkley gulp....?

I do well with gulp alive minnows - 1 inch for bluegill and the larger sizes for crappie. Been fishing the Cheb rig past few trips. It has been landing fish. I am using Varivas inch hook and have recently purchased ryugi hoobit hook in size 8. Have not had any issues with it and work it pretty much the same way as a jighead. Would love to bounce it off the bottom but there is too much of moss / grass on the bottom right now and it covers the rig in no time. Might do that in the late fall once the bottom is cleaner.

I love the one inch Gulp minnows. They are very soft and tear easy but they do catch fish.

I have some gulp maggots and red worms, not overly impressed. Could be that they’re several years old. I used minnows when I started crappie fishing and learned quick that my motor runs too quick to bait and wait. Plus the hassle of getting them blah, blah, blah. Worms were worse with the dirt in the carpet thing. I will say that I like the looks of the nymph and might try some one day when the fake stuff lays down but I don’t see that happening soon. Gulp shrimp work when nothing else will in salt water but again, messy and soft. Should I move back to colder climates I’ll have to give the stuff another try.

So general concensus is that these Gulp minnows, shrimp, worms all catches fish but hardly worth the trouble. I'll have to try once for myself to see I guess. Thanks all for chiming in! Tight lines everyone!
