I’ve recently bought a regal 1000s with the shallow spool and spent a few hours with it in my hands today. The Varivas twitchmaster VLS that I have on it casts very nice but if you get any line twist it’s pretty quick to let you know about it with twist loops in odd places. If the lure you’re using develops twist then you’re ahead of the game to let it spin on 6’ of line til it stops pretty often. This made the issues better. And that was a line thing. Casting and abrasion resistance was good. Back to the reel, it’s everything I expected but still feels a bit big for the rod it’s on. Drag is very smooth but the drag knob is pretty prominent on top of the spool and turns easily and I find myself bumping it tighter now and then. I learned today the value of closing the bail by hand and checking the line position and a short pull on the drag now and then. Just it’s personality, my other 1000 has the same thing with the drag knob. I couldn’t ask for anything smoother, but I’m sure one is made. I might have already said that I’ve handled the Sahara 500 and passed on it. Weight mostly.
