Those are some impressive weights. I know if I want to get there I have to lay out some bucks for an upgrade reel. I’m pretty careful with checking the balance of the combo and right now am happy with 8.5 or less. I do like what you guys are achieving with the high end stuff.

BobC, i'm not one to chase after lower weight as well, especially when it comes to reels, maybe I'm missing something. However I like a balanced combo as much as the next angler and that's the hard part because even newer USDM rods like St Croix, TFO, or current crop of Shimano/GLoomis are getting below the 2 oz threshold, that means sooner or later I'll have to save up for the "feather" reel just to keep from butt-heavy in the setup.

I bet those feather weight combos really jump when a fish grabs them. Less weight has got to make the strike feel sharper

Maybe that’s why my 5’4” SC Panfish & Trout rods feel more sensitive than my longer rods

Gillchaser, as of late I do really enjoy fishing with rods less than 5-6 (mostly trout rod) and my now 4-10 Ajing rod. They are fun to wield around chasing 5 to 7 inch bluegills and green sunfish with.

    I received my Carbon X 500 reel today . Weighs in at 5.1oz . Paired with my 5’ St Croix Avid @ 1.9oz , I now have a combo at 7.0oz .
Spooled it up with some 2# P-Line .
Can’t wait to go for a test drive tomorrow.

Took the new combo out for a test run this morning.
First fish I caught was a bass almost two pounds that gave the little outfit a good workout.
Caught on a yellow wooly worm on a drop shot rig .
I caught one nice bluegill among what few fish I caught . It too gave the combo a good workout .
