Smile Tailrace below Guntersville Dam, 8 Apr

Fishing was good last night, but not as productive as it has been the last three weeks or so. The crappie bite started after sundown and went for about 2 hours. Finished the night with 13 good crappie. Largest was about 14 inches and maybe 1 1/2 lbs. :D Did not catch a short fish all night! Fish still had plenty of eggs in them. The larger fish were not there last night. Do not know if that's because they have not moved in after the cold smap yet, or if they have spawned out and are gone. Fish were 3' deep. I fished a minnow under a lighted bobber mostly. I fished jigs for about an hour until it got dark. The yellow stripe and small white bass were thick. I went thru 4 dz minnows to get the 13 crappie I had. I did catch one crappie on a jig, 1/8 oz stumpjumper, chartreuse head with an albino bass assassin with a curly tail. Of the crappie I caught, 12 were Black and one was a white. I would say I easily caught over 80 fish last night between the bream, yellow and white bass, and crappie.

Were you fishing from a boat or bank?

I was fishing from the bank on the Arab side. Saw some lights on the N side but don't know any of those guys and did not get a report from anyone else. I did see a number of boats drifting the current fishing for stripe. Have you been doing any good down there? My daughter wants to go tomorrow morning, have not heard what the bite is like in the morning before sunrise. Do you know when Cooley's opens to get minnows?
