    Default Vacation

My family is taking a trip to Dauphin Island Alabama. It's in the Gulf of Mexico. We'd love to do some fishing, but boats are too expensive for our family. That would leave us fishing mainly on the beach, and maybe a little bit on piers. We're used to fishing in freshwater lakes in Minnesota, so we have literally no idea how to fish the ocean. We're going the beginning-middle of March so Id like to find out-
1.) Are there are fish I (never fished on the ocean before) would be able to catch just right off the beach? If so what are the fish called (so I can do some research)
2.) What type of bait would I use?
thanks for your time!! If you have ANY information about it please tell me, even if it doesn't answer the questions above!

Cedar point pier is on the north end of Dauphin Island bridge. They sell bait and tackle and I'm sure they would help you with information

Not sure how old your children are, but you might want to consider crabbing from the piers also. Inexpensive crab nets from most sporting good stores and chicken necks from the grocery store will get you started with the blue crabs.
Something else to consider is when you arrive and what season is open. Some areas have charters for larger numbers of individuals that reduces your cost. Not like having a charter by yourself, but gets you fishing and gives you an opportunity to meet others. For instance, I have taken my son on a boat out of Biloxi for $200 vice $600- $1000+ for an exclusive charter. Just something to think about.

Fishing is a privilege...catching is a bonus. Enjoy each precious moment we have to experience our great outdoors!

If you use your poles and they are not salt water gear, make sure you clean them to the T after the trip, or they will rust up.
