    Is this fish sick or did a gar take a bite out of him.

    Blue heron 80% probability as it was hit on the top back. I am seeing a lot of gills this year with the same injuries. Shows how shallow that crappie was to get hit by one of those "endangered" birds. I don't know if you have Lamprey eels in your river system down there or not but I catch a lot of crappie up here with a red round sore on their side caused by those blood suckers! But its usually not like the deep wound of your fish.

    I've seen turtles do that to fish on a stringer when fishing from the bank...

    Bird are turtle, most likely a bird being that it's on top
