Question New to the Birmingham Area! Need a place to fish..

Hello fellow slab assassins! My family and I just recently transferred to the area. I'm a Chief in the US Navy for over 20 years, and I have to say we really enjoy living here so far. I've been doing some searching and have been coming up a little short. Then I remembered being a long time member of the best fishing site on the net. Crappie.com has never pointed me in the wrong direction. The big issue I have is the size of my boat and motor. I have a 18 ft center console bay boat with a 115 Yamaha 4-stroke on it, and see that there are a lot of areas around here that are limited to trolling motors only, private, etc. In the next couple weeks as I get everything prepared for a visit from my farther and mother-in-law, I want to be able to take him fishing for crappie. I've been asking around for a place that would accommodate both needs, and Lay Lake seems to be the best area for what I'm looking for. Of course, some of the crappie slayers I talked to don't want to give away their honey holes, which is fine I understand. But if I could get just a couple spots to target it would be greatly appreciated. Just to let you know, I am currently without electronics, as it was stolen during our last move, so drawings, maps, and stick figures would be great. Thanks for all your help. If you would prefer to reply via private message or email, that would be fine. My email address is [email protected]

Man if your in mccalla go hit bankhead. your alot closer to it that lay and you'll catch just as many fish. you dont hear as much about bankhead because its not as sexy as lay or mitchell but you'll catch just as many fish and its more than big enough for your boat (just watch out for barges). Not being one of those people that hides his fishing spots ill even tell you where to fish. First get a lake map. if you put in at howtons camp you can go straight across the river into mulberry fork. you will see a large creek on your left after about a mile, its the only big creek on the left, fish there. after you leave there continue up mulberry till you see boat houses slap in front of you. this is bluff creek. fish there. youll see trees down in the water in both creeks, fish over them. now back to howtons. if you come out of howtons and go to the right you will see a very large creek to the left and a tributary (locust fork) on the right. first go left. this is prescot creek. at the mouth on your left is a large flat thats about 6 - 8 feet deep. fish there. be careful in prescot as the depth varies wildly once you get back in there and you need to stay in the creek channel when your running. run farther up in to prescot (be careful) and youll see and inlet with a boat house on the right with some trees down in it. fish there. back to howtons. if you pull out of howtons and circle around to the right you will be on the locust fork. go up the locust fork a few miles until you pass a bridge under constructions and start seeing bluffs on your left. fish the dropoffs under those bluffs. this is all for now.

Hard to imagine you gonna find a better place to catch crappie than Logan Martin or Neely Henry....If you go to logan martin it'll be hard to beat the backs of the creeks on the lower end of the lake....get you a paper map and look for lakeside marina..I put my 19 ft walleye boat in at that landing so I think you'll be fine....that'll put you in at cropwell and head to the backs of the creeks. Good Luck and let us know how you make out.

Guys, thank you so much for your replies. We just got back from lay today, and I have to tell you, the crappie had lock jaw today. On top of that, a bass tourney was going on at the same time. We launched out of Beeswax which was a very nice launch, with the exception of the 100 or so boat trailers parked. But we got lucky and found a parking spot. We picked up some minnows, used every color under the spectrum jigs, bugs, and curly tails. Caught a couple bluegills, and a slew of baby catfish. Boats were running up and down the main channel constantly. We first came out from Beeswax, fished a couple spots on the way out then headed south. Hit the first flat to the right when we hit the main channel, and got absolutely nothing. Went south first, hitting all the cut ins we could find on both sides. Made it as far down as that outdoor chapel place called Mud creek I think. Didn't make it as far as cedar creek. Packed it up, headed north of beeswax, did the same thing with the same results. So, all together, the trip was a bust, but a bad day of fishing is better than a great day at work.

@cj7deerslayer: where can I pick up a map of bankhead? And, about how far away from mccalla is it? I could care less how sexy a lake is as long as we catch'em. I will definitely hit those spots you laid out for me. Thanks for great info.

@AUTiger: same question, where can I pick up a map of logan martin? And, about how far away from mccalla is it? I'll hit the spots you talked about as well. Thanks.

@duckkiller: Will hit paint creek next time I am down at lay. Thanks.

I definitely need to keep and eye out for some new electronics. Fishing blind sucks. LOL! I can't thank you all enough for all info.

    Happy Fishing!

    from mccalla to bankhead....

get on 20/59 in mccalla and go up to the 18th 19th street exit in bessemer. (exit 112 i think) its about 2 miles. take a left on 18th then when you see JAcks turn left and cut over to 15th street and turn right. go 9 miles till it ends at lock 17/hueytown/allison-bonnet/warrior river road (same road, 4 names. (there will be a BP on your right and some signs in front of you. turn left and go about a 1/4 mile and you will see a gas station on the right. they have minnows. they are the only place with minnows. then continue on about a 1/2 mile to the first red light where you turn right onto taylors ferry road. go bout 7 miles and youll see pine ridge road on your right with a big Howtons camp sign. just go down that road and your there. from mccalla its less than 20 miles.

get the map at any walmart

btw id be more than happy to go with you and show you exactly where to fish since i have been boatless for almost 2 days now and im getting all antsy to fish. my new motor turned out to be more than my transom can (could) handle

A fairly unkown lake in the Birmingham area for you is lake Purdy. No private boats allowed, but you can rent one. Bring your own
trolling motor and bettery and you are in business. Last time I was there, it was packed with crappie. I live in Guntersville now
so I don't get down there much. There is a small little pond of water up here too if you haven't heard. Pretty good crappie fishing
    and nice camp grounds.
