Default Lake Talquin "Are the good times really over?"

Alright guys, as of today September 13, 2010, the Gadsden County Chamber of Commerce (Lake Talquin), has decided to put fishing as a tourist attraction, on the back burner. What that means for you as fishermen is that no tournaments such as Crappie Master or the GA SlabMasters will be held there. It's time for us to stand up and voice our concerns. This Lake and the surrounding businesses is a great asset that we cannot afford to see gone. Without help from the Chamber, other projects such as roads, parks and other recreational projects will also lack funding. We as the fishermen bring in out of state dollars that help pay for the projects (motels, lodging, food, fuel). We feel that this lake is one of the premium fisheries of the south. At this time I would like to encourage all anglers to contact the Gadsden County Chamber and let them know that you want fishing in Gadsden County kept at the forefront of their tourism focus.

Why do you think they're doing this?

Have they given a reason? They must've made some kind of statement concerning their decision?

Hmmmm!... I did a little researching and couldn't find anything on google search about a Talquin tourny ban.

... but I did find these 2 replies to the same thread on the Georgia board.

Seems like not everyone is broken up about the ban and maybe Gadsden County is doing the best thing for THEIR fishing resource!

There are still plenty of other lakes that allow tourney's in the area. What about Lake Seminole just a hop skip and jump away from Talquin???... and it's even in your own state!... or would you rather not have the "out of towners" sullying your lakes and state, not to mention pulling out hordes of limits of crappie?... but it's ok to do in someone elses state?

Crappie tournament anglers in general have more respect for the resource than to "sullying" a lake.

I expected statements like this from you GCD and I understand this is "your" board.

The context of the original poster was about how a county has turned its back on a large amount of revenue for a county that doesn't have much of anything other than the lake. The economic impact of a tournament on a lake is huge for the local and out laying communities.

Some are not going to miss tournaments at this lake. It won't improve the fishery. The over harvesting of the lake by folks spending numerous days keeping limits in the morning and again in the evening day after day are the ones hurting "their resource". Not a bunch of boats looking for the 7 biggest they can find.

Seminole is in the works for future dates. Yes it is in our state. Since when did state boarders have anything to do with anything to do with crappie fishing? Seminole, like Eufaula and West Point doesn't get a lot of reports on Crappie.com. For what reasons, I don't know. A lot of crappie fishermen are there, but I guess they just haven't got the word about Crappie.com or they are the lurkers that read and learn but don't post.

Hope you have a great night and do a little more research.

People are getting tired of this and y'all should really work to improve your public image.

Not a bunch of boats looking for the 7 biggest they can find...Filtering out the largest fish from a lake is one of the worst things you can do for the fishery, and when it's by the hundreds or thousands at a time it's real bad. When you add this to the poaching that you speak of, it compounds the problem by many times.

Maybe y'all tourney anglers should consider dropping down to a 3 pole limit and the 3 biggest fish?

    Just a suggestion.

I have never fished a Crappie tournament, nor do I care to. Fishing for money takes the fun out of it for me.

I have been exposed to the antics of some tournament anglers, and they can ruin a good day!

I'm sure the Gadsden County Chamber of Commerce has a very good reason for denying themselves of all the revenue that FOMC speaks of. I'd really like to know their reasons for doing what they've done.

So I'm a "Lurker" because I use Crappie.com as a resource to gather information on new tactics and styles of crappie fishing?
