I’m hearing a lot of talk about the one that ate the dog recently. People are wanting it killed. What do y’all think?

Kill all of them, they should be treated like and invasive species, when my father and uncle's were young they were not here, some brainiac thought it would be a good idea to release them on Wheeler to control the beaver population, don't think it worked as I see tons of beavers, muskrats and otters.
Well if it was my buddy that it ate I wouldn’t be calling animal control and all that.

They weren't brought here to "control the beaver population" although that's a popular story. They were brought in because alligators were at the risk of going extinct back in the 1970's. Biologists brought some to wheeler to serve as another population to safeguard against extinction. Most believe this is part of their native range anyway before all the Europeans arrived, although I'm sure the northern edge fluctuated through the centuries depending on weather/climate conditions.
I knew when their existence started to become more well known, it would just be a matter of time before the public panicked. Now, a dog may or may not have been killed by one, and people are losing their minds. We're so out of touch with real nature these days that we get scared when we see it.

I agree with some of that. But my dad was told by a game warden while coon hunting on wheeler that a few had been released to help control the beaver population. This was around 1980. And there’s just way too many people that know and say that. I don’t think North Alabama is where they would bring them because of fear of extinction. No offense meant.
