I had been reading some good posts about the river giving up some nice fish. So I gave Les a call and we ended up meeting at the ramp. Our plan was to try some live bait first and if that didn't work, to try some of my homemade soft plastic.
Step 1, look for and catch some live bait. ( didn't do too well doing that ) so with a few shad in the bait well we headed to my secret spot.
We anchor up and I bait up and toss the line out into the river. Les is getting his rod rigged up. I look up and my line had gone tight. Fish on !! We net the fish and I bait up again. toss the line out and put the rod in the rod holder. Les goes back to setting up his rod when he looks up and tells me that I have a fish on. He grabs the net again.
I rebait and set the rod back out. Les gets his line in the water. The sun is up by now and things are slowing down, When my rod bends and starts to scream. Fish on. Les grabs the net.
That was it for that spot. Nothing more came to visit us while we were there. We move to another location and set up. This time Les gets to have his rod bend and he brings in a cat fish. I join the fun and land one also. A few more hits and misses and we are out of live bait.
We change over our rods to lighter tackle and start pitching jigs to the shore line. We are taking turns hooking and releasing lots of small ones. Some bass, some gills. some fun. We are about to call it a day, Les takes a shot under a tree and misses. We move in to unhook his line from the branch, My wine was in the water at the time. I let it go slack while we moved the boat to release the other line. My line jumps, I lift the rod tip and it bends, then the drag starts to sing. We are well on our way into that tree and I was getting concerned I was going to loose the fish. Les said he was cleared off the tree, I told him to grab the net. He asked why I needed the net. He look back at me and said that I needed the net.
The take for the day:
Never did find any crappies this time out.
