how long have they been their?
I fish a 3 acre pond. Bass, gills, and crappie are present. The banks are steep drops. Cattails and weed beds extend 25 ft from the bank in 12-15 fow. Then no structure at all except for the occasional hump. Most of the water past the weeds is 20-40 fow. I placed cedar piles in 20 fow just past the weeds to draw some fish out of the weeds and to the brush. Nada, nothing. No fish of any kind. The mystery is WHY?

That is odd. Must be something they don't like

possibly too deep ? too much adjacent weed cover ? are there springs in the body of water ?
Springs=no
too much weed cover=good point, maybe
too deep = would not think so since crappie can be caught as deep as 30 feet. The piles are 6-8 ft tall into the water column.

It's hard to know sometimes why crappie will select the structure they hang out at. In one of my old slips I had two porcupine fish attractors placed 4' apart from each other along the back of my slip, both resting on the bottom of the lake. They were build on the same day, using the same materials. Both had the pvc pipe sanded before being inserted in the ball. One was always loaded with crappie while the one never had any crappie on it when I looked at them with my fish finder.
I thought them identical but the crappie disagreed with me.

I think that I will try 2 more piles at completely different areas. First area will be a location with 50% smaller weed bed. Second will be at the edge of a real sharp drop off. Might as well try something.
