Default Blacknose Crappie or Black & White Cross

Caught this 1.4 lb crappie yesterday in Blood River area on KY Lake.

I've heard other fishermen talk about catching these. Some call it a Black Nose while some call it a White & Black cross.

What's the member's opinion of this crappie?

Here's another pic showing black line from dorsal fin to nose tip.

Hi, That is a black nose. They are a hybrid. I see they are starting to grow. They normally have white crappie habits.

Thanks! I also caught 3 male white crappie keepers in the same stakebed as this Black Nose male.

It's a Blacknose .... not a hybrid. A Black/White Crappie hybrid cross wouldn't have a black stripe. It would, however, have 7 dorsal spines ... but would look more like a White Crappie than a Black Crappie.

For instance, our current State Record (which was determined to be a hybrid):

You may have actually caught a "hybrid" Crappie, and didn't even notice :

A Blacknose is simply a regular Black Crappie that has a pigment gene that creates the black striping. They occur naturally, and in lakes in at least 13 states from the midwest to the far southeast of the country. They've been stocked in waters in many states.

Thanks CrappiePappy for the ID class and image demonstrating differences in the 3 species!!! That makes sense. This black nose had 7 dorsal fins and no vertical bars.

Only place in the state of KY that I've caught a Blacknose ... was Cedar Creek Lake. But, I've caught a bunch of them over the years at Watts Bar Lake (E. Tenn.) Only Crappie I've ever caught that sometimes jump out of the water on hookset, and pull like they mean it !! I can almost tell before I see the fish, if it's a Blacknose .... just from the fight. Wouldn't hurt my feelings if they were introduced to all the lakes in KY.
