Steve, down here they run a 1x6 fascia board with a 1x2 at the top then let the shingles hang over the edge a couple of inches. Same way all across the south. Last spring when I was at my daughters in Atlanta I had to fix an area that the shingles had "rotted out" along the eave and when it rained water would run in behind the fascia board. I'll be putting a new roof on for her soon so I just slid a piece of coil stock under the shingles a couple of rows up and over the edge, a temporary band aid till later.

I have seen that done here, but usually on older homes (1950's ish)

The south is 70 years behind in some areas. Eventually they will "rise again". As soon as they figure out hydrodynamics, spelling, and their cousins

I am by no means a pro at building, but I do learn and listen, as a bonus I can read as well.

Aluminum Fascia, tucked under the drip edge, with storm & Ice shield going over the drip edge to the edge.

Starter shingles’s across the bottom sticking over about 1/8th inch.

    Shingle as directed...........

    Is that right?

I have to be dang close for a Pollack.

    Jerry,
I can be on your crew. However, be aware, I don’t move fast........

Progress being made. Didn't get as many bodies as I had anticipated so the old timer has to work harder but that's the story of my life. It's hard to ask 30ish family men to give up a 4 day week end to shingle a roof. Even harder to ask their wives if they can help.

Entire roof is striped, back is 95% done, front is ready for shingles with all the drip edge on and ice and water and underlayment on. Nothing on the front to slow us down other than two valleys. My son has to work this week so what we don't get done today I will finish by myself. Three more days with zero chance for rain. Heck, I must be getting used to this roofing, it only takes 15-20 minutes to get loosened up in the morning and I hardley notice the sore muscles and back anymore.

We're going to stuff some chicken breast with boudin today and put them on the grill for dinner. Potato salad and brussel sprouts from the garden and sweet potato pie for dessert. MSU basketball plays later today so we'll watch that while we eat.

Front done, small strip on back to do where the shingles were setting. Just a few more to lay and some vent and cap. Chicken on the grill and Canadian Football League Grey Bowl on the TV. Man do my ham strings ache. I think I don't like roofing.

You only “Think”, you don’t like it?????

I know I don’t, but when I have done it in the past, there was no “Crew” and I humped everything to the roof myself to save &
    $

It sucked, but I did it. My Moms was done last summer, hers sucked too, but I had my boys helping.

It still sucks. Roofing for me ranks right up there with a root canal.
