Default Just checking in and Happy Thanksgiving

Made it to La. Left Tues. at 10 am, drove straight through and got here Wed. at 2:30 am. The drive was pretty uneventful, which is a good thing. We did get caught in a dead stop traffic jam in Terra Hautte and tried to exit around the jam, but that was a dud. Detours, road construction and railroad crossings. Enough said.

After a nap I was back up at my regular time. Took a drive up to Lake D'arbonne and Finch lake then back to my sons to start stripping shingles and stock the roof. They don't offer roof top delivery down here so we got a guy with a loader to get them to the eaves for us. Got half the roof striped before dark and will start laying new shingles today.

That's about it for now, sorry no fishing report was included. I hope to go Saturday and again next week so stay tuned.

    Glad your OK,

Enjoy the time, and try to relax, as best you can on a roof.

We are waiting until Saturday when son Chris isn’t working for our “Thanksgiving” family dinner, however Jr invited us to come up for dinner at his place.....venison steak, gravy, mashed potatoes, stove top dressing and green bean casserole......I’d say for something just thrown together after he and his wife were out goose hunting he did a heck of a job.

Hope you’re all enjoying dinners with family!

Wanted: One roofing crew in Northern Louisiana.

Things are moving along slowly. We've ran into a few unexpected issues but have them figured out and are finally making some progress. They don't use drip edge down here and I want to eventually finish the eaves in aluminum so we are putting drip edge on. The first problem is they didn't run the roof sheathing all the way to the fascia board so I had nothing to nail the drip edge to. We are having to cut the bottom edge of the sheathing and remove it then add a 1x4 in it's place. Took a while to figure out a solution and a couple of trips to Lowes to get the right supplies but what we're doing is working nicely.

There is also a enclosed patio on the back of the house that has a hand framed hip roof. When we striped the shingles from this I found that the hand framed roof had been added on top of the original flat roof. Whoever framed it didn't strip the two layers of old roofing, which is close to two inches thick, or two pieces of steel drip edge that were buried under the new framing. I spent 6 hours getting the tar chipped off and the two drip edges removed, then had to remove the fascia board and raise it two inches. Time consuming but now it's done as right as we could do it.

After running our ice and water and synthetic under layment we finally were able to start laying shingles yesterday at noon. We were able to get the porch roof done and the back side of the house 75% finished. Hopefully today we"ll make good progress as well. With luck we will be done early on Sunday. Luckily the weather is perfect, high 50's low 60's, sunny and no wind. No chance of rain until Wednesday next week.

As a side note, I did make one terrible mistake. Bean soup should NEVER be on the lunch menu for any kind of project. It was darn good and when I said no wind, well there was some wind being produced.

Jeff, I got up to look at Finch Lake on Wednesday and in the spring we are going to have to give it a try. Decent launch and very fishy looking. Might turn out to be another boat ride through the woods but I think we can find a few biters.

Time to make the coffee, I'll try to give an update tonight after dark. If I can stay awake that long. Man, I need a vacation!

Too bad you didn't need help about Feb/March. What did they use in place of drip edge or don't rain water "wick up" down there? I'm always hesitant in tackling a job someone else was there first......so many unknowns but it sounds like you"re winning the battle.

Maybe you should have taken superman with you, he loves to shingle! He'd probably have it done in no time with his new superman socks......they make his feet move faster! Course then if he is over doing it, he better have a superman jockstrap so's he can "strap em up"!

Coffee sounds good, time to make a pot! Hope you get out fishing so you can rest up......sounds like you need it.

Finch sounds like an adventure....looks like your not getting out with Mel today? Seems like no project ever goes to plan but at least the weather is holding for you....
