    Default West,Boggs/Turtle Creek

West Boggs today was shut down this morning due to a cold front overnite and wind all morning straight out of the north. I did catch 20 bass on jigs and crank baits longlining and 4 were legal fish up to 3 lbs. this lake has a lot of 13” bass in it since stocking. Also, finally nailed a blue gill that was a chunk and 10 inches long. No crappie caught and when I left water temp was 61. I only saw 2 crappies caught by other fishermen by 2:30 pm and everybody I chatted with didn’t catch any either. This lake can be fickle as all get out. Yesterday fiend of mine fished it and kept 20 crappies all 11-12 inch and he fishes it 4-5 times a week and it’s strickly more miss than hit with the way weather has been. I also on the way home pulled over and chatted with another friend of mine that was coming back from bass fishing Turtle Creek. Today, he was 1 of 6 boats out fishing it, and he caught the only bass that was checked on by the boat house you check in and out of. He told me yesterday 5 boats had caught over 175 bass. That’s the difference a cold front morning makes on a shallow lake like Turtle Creek. If you do decide to fish it, be careful of the wind. They will sound a siren if the wind goes above 10-15 mph and you have to immediately get off the lake. The problem is the launch site is totally unprotected so you’re likely to swamp the boat getting it trailered. This used to be a great crappie lake and rumor has it they are going to restock it. Will keep you posted if I hear anything.

We were going to go to GW on Crane but had to change plans and back track to WB. Saw who I thought to be you getting ready to leave. Was going to make the loop and say hello but you got underway before I could do that. Found midafternoon fishing tuff only collecting a gill now and then. Things changed around five o'clock and we started catching crappie, big gills and bass. Crappie were not big but some were eaters and wearing their colors. My best bite is coming late in the day. Been hearing for years that TC would be restocked with crappie but seems never to happen. Have caught a couple while chasing bass and they are big but far between. TC can be brutal and deadly in the wind. Seen big bass boats with nothing but the motor and seats above the water line there. Hard to escape with a north wind at the ramp. Have to take a break from fishing and get some work done at the farm.

Whaler, have you fished GW yet and done any good? When I was on Boggs, I viewed spawning beds off the long points as deep as 15-19’ with fish near them and even some in the beds using the Hummingbird Helix Mega 9”. Tons of beds everywhere from last spawn I am guessing but water temp is too cold I would think but couldn’t get any takers with jigs in the deep around those beds either.

I had a very good day one time at GW when temps were 52. Found a school of good fish in weeds and wore my arm out. Last two trips were very slow. But, I am not a knowledgeable crappie fisherman and tend not to make change up's. GW is coming back for crappie and bass after severe over harvest of big breeders. I don't keep many fish except for a friend and grandkids and then only 9 to 11s and males if possible.
