I'm thinking weight is some where in the 3-5oz range (w/o chains) ... since the metal pipe section is 90% full of lead :D
The chains aren't "necessary" ... I used it for a long time without them, and it worked fine. I put the chains back on it, years ago, but cannot for the life of me remember why Rofl
It originally came with shorter chains ... and I probably added the longer ones, thinking I was doing something to make it better Doh :p

Pipe body is 1 5/8" long ... 1" diameter. Copper wire, on the side, is looped over ... so you can slip your line between it & the pipe. (picture makes it look like it's two individual loops, that come out of the pipe & go back into the pipe ... but, it don't )

Since summer is upon us. I imagine the use of deep diving crankbaits is more the norm since the bass try and keep cool in the deep waters. But i can still fish the topwaters and shallows, lets say after a cold front has passed right?

Also what time of the year is it best to switch from a minnow crankbait to a shad crankbait? Fall?

Unless the waters you're fishing have no Shad species present, a Shad imitating bait is always the best bet, regardless of season. The reason being that there aren't many "minnow" species that are a mass schooling species, and are more prone to being scattered out. Shad, on the other hand, are a mass schooling species ... and offer the schooling "bass" species more opportunity to detect & feed upon them. Shad species also offer more nourishment vs effort, than do minnows or other fishes.

It's also notable to point out that White Bass & Hybrid Striped Bass are more tolerant to higher water temps, than a true Striper. Therefore, they are less dependant on staying deep to survive.

Cold fronts are more a change in atmospheric pressure, than a true "cooling effect" on subsurface waters. In that regard, they affect shallow fish more than deep fish, and usually in a negative way. Best bet is to fish "prior" to the front passing over your area's waters.

Well it seems that prior to the cold front moving through, they go deep, also when the pressure drops. But when the pressure is steady/rising or after the front has passed, they seems to come up closer to the shore or jump out of the water.

But now i would like to take the time to talk about crankbait colors. I need to do some condensing in my box as it seems i have way too many crankbaits and not enough of the other kind of fishing tackle. Such as jigs and floaters.
