Thread: White bass hook prefrence?

H&H spinnerbaits, all kinds of in-line spinners especially in white, pink or chartreuse, Rat-L-Traps, Berkley swim shads to locate them in deeper water, chartreuse or florescent crankbaits like Bandits for trolling in the summer. They generally bite so aggressively that it doesn't matter whether I have a single or treble hook on my lure.

Sometimes we catch doubles but it isn't very common, the rig allows us to fish multiple depths at one time and it really works. Several of us fish them this way and the jigs aren't tied to the line so they move up and down while jigging. It works.

Whatever hook the bait comes with, as long as it's not too lite of a hook :p

*Chicken Liver (never used it, but know it works on Hybrids )

2 white or chartreuse curly tail jigs (first 1/16th and second 1/32) double rigged about 12 to 18 inches apart. Fish this rig on the side of a dam wall or thru slack water alone rocky points. Long cast with a slow retrieve will normally get that aggressive thump. Sometimes you will catch two at a time.

Three small jigs tied about 12" apart. When the bite is on, it doesn't seem to matter if it's plastic, hair or maribou. Sidewinder spoons, Roostertails and Road Runners are ok too

Used to catch Hybrids below the dam at Pickwick. Moved closer to Nashville in 2003 and found a place to fish from the bank right at the base of Percy Priest Dam on the lake side. I noticed all of these chicken liver boxes around and thought people were coming there to fish for Catfish. Then I found out they were using them to catch Hybrids. At first I thought someone was pulling my leg...but they catch a lot of of them on chicken livers. You are right about the hook Crappiepappy. I use a Kastmaster 1/8th ounce and change the hook out with an XCalibur TX3 dressed #4 hook and cast for Whites in the jumps. More often than not I will get a lot of hookups with Striper's in the 7 to 10 pound range. Even if I didn't get the Striper's I still need that hook for the 3 pound White Bass. Had them bend the hooks that come on the 1/8th Kastmaster too many times.

I tell you chicken liver will catch them, I was fishing meldahl dam on the ohio river and we would fish in certain places certain times of the year and catch the whites and hybrids. I typically fish plastic but one time there was a little young kid or younger fella fishing with livers split shot and a hook and just catching them one after another. I would throw my artificial in and get nothing, he would throw the livers in and bang fish on. I have also noticed that river hybrids also really like soft crawls.
