    Default Perch Identification

Well perch in my area are an elongate fin fish very similar to walleye in shape and finnage. They are a darker green on top blending to a white belly, with dusky black over shaded bars not quite reaching the belly. the pectoral and anal fins can be a vivid orange to a golden yellow color depending on sex.
There can be in my opinion no mistaking this little jewel of the frying pan for me!
By the way, perch in my area (Yakima), run average size (6 to 10"), but i have the lucky fortune to have a private pond to fish which produces perch 10 to 17" with regularity. (mostly the 12" variety, its a little jewel of a pond about 3 acres or so)

Are you sure those are not Dolly Varden which is a Char?

If I were still out there, I'd be down on that lake almost every day.
Of all the places I ever lived, Washington state had the most Fish and Game. There was never a time of year when you couldnt go get something to eat.

I always wanted to fly fish the river alongside Hiway 97 going toward Yakima.
I just wish I could be better at fishing. Or maybe luckier!:D

    Default Perch ID.

Trust me i know the difference between a perch and a char.
I went to the pond last night to try my luck in moderate to high winds, and i caught 5 perch ranging from 8" to 11" and a surprise black crappie 12" long!
Sure do appreciate being allowed to fish there. (by the way there are no trout or char,or brookies in this pond, although it is a former gravel pit around 90' deep or so.) so it could hold trout in it if they were stocked. There is a large population of big large mouth bass in this pond and they were jumping last night with regularity, i will try top water this weekend.
By the way all of these fish are caught on crawlers or meal worms, and if the perch are not biting, there's always a sunfish willing to keep me interested.
I know it sounds like it's to good to be true, but this lake is for real, and it has not been fished by outsiders for years, and was managed by the wdfw for awhile so thats where the different species came from.

Well, catch lots of fish. You dont want it to overpopulate or the little Bluegills will be the winners. All the bigger fish will dissapear. The Blue gills just have too many young and eat all the larger fish's eggs.

    Thudpucker:

Here is a link to show you what yellow perch look like.

    Yellow Perch Fish Identification

I fish for them often, great eating fish and usually willing biters, my kids love to perch fish as it can be constant action once you get on a school.
