    Default Moving to Tacoma

Howdy folks, I talked with all you a few months ago when I first heard I may be moving, well, it's a done deal now. I'm to report to Fort Lewis in March 08. Here are a few questions for you, if you don't mind.

I'm looking to purchase a house and would like to be close to a freshwater lake that has at least crappie. I also need to keep in mind the commute to Lewis daily, not to mention schools and crime. I have been looking on the net at lakewood and yelm, but not really sure with traffic how close they are to lewis. Another question, my boat is a sea pro bay boat 20 footer, will it be functional up there? Does anyone use downriggers? Thanks for any help you can provide. TexFisher

    Hey Tex,

When I was stationed at Ft. Lewis I lived in Spanaway but at that time I didn't have children to worry about schools but where I was, the crime wasn't bad. Depending on where in Lakewood, the crime varies as does the schools. You can usually be on the fort from Spanaway in about 30 minutes and that puts you within decent reach of Tanwax, Kapowsin, Ohop and Rapjohn which all have some crappies in them, although I'll warn you, the crappie fishing here isn't what your used to, both in size and quantity.

Wish you the best, and once your up here, let us know, we always welcome another warmwater fisherman.

Andy, thanks for the reply. Yeah, I know the crappie won't be like the hogs we have here. I think I will miss the stripers and hybrids the most. Going to be a big adjustment. Where are you located know? Take Care, Larry

I am currently in Graham, although the address is Spanaway. I am within 15-20 minutes of Ohop, Kapowsin, Clear and Tanwax, so to me, I am in the perfect spot. Just close enough to get off work and still have a couple hours to fish during the summer.

Yea, it is quite an adjustment, but there are fish to be caught here...it just took me awhile to figure out how since I was used to looking for baitfish and channel breaks where here there isn't a lot of that. I miss the Stripers the most but my dad is a guide on the TN river, so a trip home can cure that want..

    TexFisher,

I was stationed at Lewis back in 2002. I lived all the way in Olympia because I have family in that area. I like Olympia BUT.... There are lots of Protesters that live in the Area. There are two good Bass and Gill lakes in Lacey called Chambers lake and there is good fishing on post too. I here they are building some new houses on post and If I can get stationed there I would probably live on post this time.

If you get back down in the Olympia area Lake St Claire has a pretty healthy population of crappie. In Pierce county Hart's lake, Lewis Lake on Ft Lewis is also a good spot.

With all this good salmon fishing here,ya gonna forget about them stripers and Hybrids back there. A 20 ft boat with downriggers is great in the salt and lakes here.

Thanks for all the info, glad to hear my boat will be functional up there. I sure didn't want to sell it and have to start all over. What do you guys think about Yelm? I have been looking at houses on line around there and there is some water around there, I wouldn't call them lakes, but they do. Im thinking they're more for recreational type stuff. Is there any good game fish lakes around there? Thanks

Yelm puts you within close shot of Lawrence Lake which I hear has some decent bass fishing as well as your just around the corner from St.Clair where there are crappie, bluegill, bass, perch, trout etc. Most of the lakes here you would likely call a pond after being in Texas but there are some larger lakes/reservoirs that you can fish if you like bigger water. American is decnt sized, Alder is a reservoir that's pretty big and you can always drive to Seattle area and fish lake Washington.

Brokentrail, do you fish mostly fresh water or salt? And what about the rivers? I have a buddy who has a sled, and I'm pretty sure I don't want to take a glass boat up the columbia but are there other deep rivers that are navigatable? Thanks
