I didn't know we had black nose crappie this far east in the state. I did see some at the SML Bash but I did not catch a black nose.
Nice looking makings for a fish fry!
Fished the Nottoway the last 2 afternoons.
Yesterday, I got to the river about 3:30 or so. Trolled/casted jigs up to my "go to" spot. Caught 5 crappie on a minnow/cheese bobber combo, and nothing on the jig. Fished my "go to" area for the final 2 hours, with only one keeper. Most fish caught in 8-10' of water fishing 4-5' deep. Lesson learned.
Went back today a bit earlier. Got there about 2, and decided to start downstream from where I caught fish yesterday and troll upstream. Trolled about 150' and started catching fish. Fished the same basic area till the weather changed a little after 5. Sitting in 13' +/- water, casting to 8-10', fishing 4-6' deep with minnows.
Caught 50 crappie +/-. 10 - 6-8", 15 - 8-9", 10 - 9-10", and the rest were keepers, up to 12.5". Kept a little more than half of the "keeper" size for a fry, along with a couple of hook swallowers.
The first picture is one of the hook swallowers. About 9.5 inches. I've never caught one of these, but have seen the pictures posted on Crappie.com.

Shellquacker where is the best place to put in on the Nottoway? I have my boat now and wanted to fish the Nottoway and NWR to start. Any info you can provide would be appreciated. Areas, tactics, tips on both rivers? Thanks in advance to all posts.
GO VOLS AND TITANS!!!!!

PanMan: On the blacknose crappie. I showed it to by bro-in-law who lives on the Nottoway and has fished there and the Blackwater his whole life. He said he'd never seen one. Go figure.
NavyAngler: From where you are, the easiest way to get to a good ramp is to take 58E, to the 258S exit. You'll cross the river and see the boat launch on the left. It's a large lot and a decent concrete double ramp with dock.
The river is rolling pretty good right now, with lots of limbs, leaves etc. floating around.
Try the downstream side of an inside bend where there's a current break. Talked to several guys fishing for striper with mixed success. One had a couple in the 5lb. range on Wed. Another guy said he had caught "Half a bucket" of white perch.
With the warming weather next week, it should only get better.

Great job Les...I like those fighting Blacknose....I, like Panman, didn't know that Blacknose crappie had made it that far East..
