After a lot of searching here & on google, I have a bit more to go on now. Joined the Virginia Crappie group on fakebook today so that's giving me something to watch for daily reports.
My folks live there & dad wants my brother & I to go fishing with him in his pontoon boat. (He's handicapped & can't go alone.) It's a pleasure boat, so no electronics to find fish with. I figure our best bet is to try for crappie when they are moving up shallow to spawn. (I'm recovering from shoulder surgery, so I don't think it'd be wise for me to fight anything bigger than a crappie.)
If anyone can give me an educated guess as to when such a window should occur, I'd be grateful.

its occurring now. try throwing minnows under bobbers along shoreline in coves, shallow like 2 to 4 feet. Try different areas and coves. If no fish then try a little deeper, like 4 to 10 feet, working your way out towards the mouth of the coves if you still get no fish and moving your minnow progressively deeper.
