Welcome. The James and Appomattox rivers has good populations. If they ever stop getting high and muddy from all the rain. The Chickahominy River has great crappie fishing most all year. See recent threads below. Fish are biting now and the Chick River rarely floods and water looks good.
Lake Chesdin is full of crappie. Do many that the population sometimes seems stunted.
Someone else can chime in about Little Creek and Diascund reservoirs. As well as Lake Anna to the North.
Lake Gaston and Kerr Lake 1.5-2 hours south. Both are great.
Not crappie, but the James River in downtown Richmond will be busting with spawning Shad, white perch and herring starting mid March. Easy pickings from shore.
Hey Howard thanked you for this post
Where abouts on the James typically would you say to look for them? I put in at Osbourne a lot and usually head down towards Enon bridge and past for bass fishing but really want to start exploring crappie on the James more too
Plenty of places to fish. Check out the pits on the james, good still water. Farther down river past the BHB the mouths of creeks should start loading up in anticipation of the spawn. The chick is a great place, lake and river. Diascund and little creek res are trolling motor only lakes. I personally love diascund bc of that. Tight lines.

I’ve fished Diascund a few times before, that’s a nice impoundment. Never hit LC though, yet. Definitely want to try more on the James though, it’s interesting to me trying to figure out a tidal system and fishing it successfully
