Default Urgent news regarding crappie limits at Buggs...

Fellow anglers, I have contacted Dan Michaelson from the VDGIF voicing our concerns about crappie at Kerr Lake and the need for some harvest restrictions. Our correspondence dates back to last year when he assured me the VDGIF was taking a serious look at "Buggs" and the possibility of imposing some type of creel limits. He stated based upon recent creel surveys to be conducted in the spring of 2017 and angler input, a change may be in the works. That time has arrived !A proposal in in the works based upon Mr. Michelson's recommendation. He indicated some numbers and ask that I not make it public since it is preliminary at this point. I can assure the new regulations if passed are fair and something we all can live with. Mr. Michaelson also strongly recommends that concerned anglers voice their opinions in support of harvest restrictions. Angler support is needed to assure the board will accept the proposal. We are standing at the crossroads. Now is the time to make a difference. I ask anyone that cares about the future of crappie angling at "Buggs" to PLEASE take a few minutes and respond to the recommended link provided. Or you can contact Dan Michaelson personally. I have included the recent emails exchFrom: Michaelson, Dan (DGIF)

    Mr. Crumpton,

I am glad that you emailed me. I had sent some information to another angler who I thought was kind of speaking for the crappie anglers at Kerr (at least on the chat rooms) but I never heard back. We have just begun our formal regulation process and any support for a regulation is very important. Public comment is ongoing so please spread the word and have folks comment on the website below to be “officially” recognized.

    Thank you again.

Mr. Michaelson, I spoke with you last fall of 2016 regarding the decision to impose some form of harvest restrictions on crappie at Kerr Lake. I was told it was a lengthy process involving collection of data from various sources and most importantly I assume , gill net surveys. Based upon the current information obtained by your department, where do we stand in making a decision about Kerr. I feel there is a large and growing concern about the unregulated harvest of crappie from Buggs. Many of us seasoned anglers that have fished " Buggs Island Lake" for decades have in agreement witnessed a decline in the crappie fishery. I support the decisions of the VDGIF and the professional managers that make the decisions regarding our wildlife resources. However ; a growing number of anglers feel a need for some type of regulations concerning crappie. Thanks for your time and consideration ! Earl Crumpton
