It's been a while, but I used to live in Colonial Heights and fished Chesdin quite a bit.
There are a number of creeks on the north side of the middle portion of the lake that can be very productive, and the north bank of the lake itself can be good. The channel is close to the north bank in the middle third of the lake.
In particular, look for beaver houses. They cache branches stuck into the bottom near the houses and those are great structure.
Once it warms up, you almost have to fish in the creeks to get away from the water skiers.
I enjoyed fishing the lake, but like many places, 10% of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish, and you have to put in a lot of time there to get into the 10%.

Cattle creek does pretty good in march till mid april. Good numbers but not many slabs
For many years the crappie at Chesdin suffered from an out-of-control population of white perch.
