Yesterday, I email VDGIF biologist Bob Greenlee and asked where else I can find perch in the James/Chick waters. Here is his reply this morning.

"Yellow perch numbers are highest in the low Chickahominy and in other tributaries of the James. Outside of the waters of the tidal Chickahominy we have very little information on where anglers go for successful yellow perch fishing in the tidal James system. Our fisheries survey data indicate creeks such as Grays Creek, Upper Chippokes Creek, Wards Creek, Powell Creek and Herring Creek, which are all tidal tributaries of the James, hold good numbers of yellow perch. Other than the Chickahominy I would recommend trying any of the tidal tributaries of the James.

    Regards,
    Bob

Last year, I spent some time on the phone with another VDGIF biologist talking about perch. He did tell me that unlike the fish that seek out moving water to carry there eggs, yellow perch spray there sticky eggs onto wood or weeds. They stay there while they mature into creatures. So when we aren't having luck in the 4-10' water that is easy to fish, we might have to move very shallow, near structure and fish tight.

This yesterday from a bass board. I think this is Bob's fishing hole on the Northwest River in Cheasapeake. He was bass fishing with a crankbait.

    Caught a nice one today

Ok I guess the word er fish is out. I hit one Sunday in a crappie tournament, thought I had a huge crappie the way it fought. Had a terrible crappie day, didn't even make weigh in. Yes I let her go as she was full of eggs also.

I don't believe that about Gray's Creek. I've fish it many times and don't recall any Yellow Perch. Crappie are there but you got to catch the tide just right. But then that was years ago and the fish do wander.
