During the afternoon (before discovering the news article) I talked with ranger Hostinsky. Later, another crappie fisherman talked to her after reading the article. Here's the sum of what he and I gathered.

Ms. Hostinsky told both of us that she measured this fish at 22"...and it was one of several citation-size fish (assorted species) landed by the unnamed fisherman. She helped the fisherman complete the citation registration form, but the park does not have a certified scale, so the citation will be limited to length. She did not understand the DGIF rules for "Angler of the Month", "Angler of the Year", and state record. All three require the angler to submit a weight certification. To be considered for a state record, the weigh-in must be witnessed by a game warden or other DGIF employee. Unless the angler received better advice after leaving the park, the fish was never weighed.

My friend asked Ms. Hostinsky about the 2014 newspaper article. She said she maintains copies of all her reports. She checked that one and said it didn't mention anything about 22 inch crappie. She said that the editor of the paper must have altered her report.

She told both of us that she took a picture with her cell phone. Maybe we'll get a copy & be able to speculate about the weight.

Depends on which "record keeping" organization you talk to

Current IGFA "All tackle World Record Crappie" are listed as :

White Crappie - 5lb 3oz Enid Lake, Mississippi
Black Crappie - 5lb 0oz private lake, Missouri

SOME sites allude to a 6lb Crappie caught in Louisiana, and even list it as a "World Record" ... but, it would appear that it wasn't weighed on a certified scale and the proper registration procedures were not followed (and it was obviously not submitted to the IGFA)
But, in spite of that : "The Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum recognizes a 6-pound fish caught Nov. 28, 1969, by Lettie Robertson from Westwego Canal in Louisiana." (copied from AGFC website article from 2011)

That's how it looks at this point. If we get a decent cell phone picture, that should help us confirm that it was a very large fish--and there's still a chance that there were other witnesses or the angler took more pictures before applying the knife. The best possible case would be that someone else convinced the angler to get the fish weighed and prepare another citation form.

2014 ? The February report says January. I would assume last month. Sounds like a lot of confusion. Well I didn't catch it and looks like nobody can substantiate it so I'll call BS on this one. One of those my buddy's cousins mothers friend you know the guy lives across from them, they catch 22 inch crappie all the time. Oh well when the wind quits blowing I'll be back out trying to catch my own 22 inch crappie or maybe a 22 inch bass. I'll take either one. Ramp iced in up here gotta warm up a little.

I bet it was a flounder and she didn't know her fish well. Or maybe a smallmouth.

Neither of those species are found in this lake.

I'd say it was a grass carp.

That fish could have wound up hanging on a wall somewhere or it could wind up swimming in hot grease. Probably makes no difference to the fish - lol
