    Default Good problem to have

Just moved into a house with a garage. I can now take the Jon boat out of the back of my truck and put it on a trailer. Here's the problem. I bought the 12' flat bottom specifically to fit in the back of the truck. I'm seriously considering upgrading to at least a 14'. Should I stay with a flat bottom or change to a V hull. I still plan on fishing HP limited lakes but I'm now less than a mile from the Potomac river and Leesylvania state park. I'm thinking the V hull would be a lot better for those waters.

Looking for all opinions. I know this is a Ford v Chevy type of discussion. I own a dodge.

The Potomac is a minimum of 2.5 miles wide at Leesylvania State Park. I'd choose a V over a flat bottom or mod-V, but that's a lot of water for a 14' boat of any design.

V hull and NEVER look back. Tip ~ the new vhulls arent rounded at the bottom and dont rock near as bad. I take my 14' alumacraft V hull in the James River all the time. If a wave / wake is coming and it looks too big, just turn the boat to the wake and its done. Very safe boat.

Boat slightly modified inside with the same amount of flotation but no middle seat with a 15 I mean 9.9 will run 24 mph. Its really a nice all around boat for lakes and bigger rivers. The sides are WAY TALLER than a jon boat. If I had to do it all over again I'd get a 16 ft with a 20" transom. Hell I'd take that to the monitor merrimac.

Nice boat, only 2' too short.

I agree, especially about never looking back. V-bottom is nicer ride. Jon is great for small water. So, if there is any chance at all you will be on bigger water, get the semi-v. [A v-bottom is v in front and back (like a rowing dory), a semi-v is v in front only.]

I have the same boat as UTR and love it. Mine is a '91 w/rivets, and starting to leak some. I will get another 16' semi-v when I upgrade.

I thought Russell and Deans boats are deep Vs, Mine is a Mod-V ( jon with an aggresive V bow) I like my MV1448, perfect for what I do (small inland freshwater rivers and lakes) really good for those low bridges. Ive took mine out to the monitor merrimac, was fine going out early morning but felt like a speck out there at the small boat channel. And was a wet ride back in with the chop.

I must say, Ive been in both UTR and Idunnos boats, They are extremely comfortable to fish from, if you dont have any low bridges and only fish out of a boat... Go with the 14 or 16 V.

On a side note alumacraft now makes a Mod V 1448 without a center bench, wish I had that one but hey...Im Happy with what I got..

Are you selling your 12ft flat bottom hull?

Russell That sure is a pretty boat, Still feel back about getting blood in it at goochland. P.S. We need to be heading in the direction you are in that pic VERY Soon! Tag team em like last year..

Default I really like my v-hull

I have had this boat for between 3 and 4 years. Its a 1989 16' Astro boat v-hull with 3 swivel seats and a live well. It originally had a mercury 9.9 and I upgraded to a four stroke Suzuki 25hp. I use it in the James, Appomattox, and Chick rivers and several lakes. Its very stable in the water. Many times on the Appomattox I will meet larger boats or barges and the v-hull rides through the wake very safely. That is a nice looking Alumacraft. Name: 3n43p53o25V05Z15W2a493b208df41c591f60.jpg
