    Default Transducer mounting problem?

I drilled the holes in my transom today to mount my transducer and found that that particular part has no wood behind it. Just maybe a half inch of fiberglass. Will the screws hold up in the glass or have I got problems? this is about the only place I can mount it and can't get to the back side for it being a tight spot and foam filled around the edges of the boat underneath and down low. This is a bass boat. I hope the screws will hold OK. The screws had a good bite going in and snugged up good. Opinions please.CF

That ½" glass should hold it just fine.

put some marine grade silicone around the screws when you put them in

Thanks guys. I put 3M 5200 in the first two holes. Got to get out for a test run this week and then drill the third hole. That is, if I can get that stupid HB latching transducer bracket to pop back open. I latched it together the other day and boy that was a mistake. Made me cuss a lot. Added another page to the English dictionary. Made me talk ugly. Then I saw a small part in the directions that said use a screw driver to gently pry the thing open. I got screw drivers and a 5 foot long crow bar. It will get opened back up one way or another.CF

Those things take some force to open. I think it is suppose to be a safety feature--if you run over something, the transducer snaps open and rotates backward, instead of breaking off...NOT. I ran over a 16' 2" X 6" that was floating on the surface one night (while striper fishing) and that dang thing didn't open or budge a bit! The transducer snapped right off, and the dang thing was still closed!

Cf,they make a plate that mount to boat and transducer mounts to it leaving room to move transd around without drilling more holes and you can silicone whole plate to help hold from coming off

Yeah Idunno, You would think that is what they had in mind. I thought at one point the other day I was going to have to hook a chain to it and pull it open with our Cat D6 bull dozer. In the process of getting it open, some of the plastic got torn and stripped off the tabs. I took my pocket knife and shaved them down smooth so they are not quite as thick as they were. Maybe that will help. will soon see.CF

CF, those transducers are big and if placed like an old one they catch a lot of water. Two thoughts: it's probably not going to work while you are on plane. Only idling. Second: tha first time you plane off, check the spray coming off of it. It can get ugly. And if it is, make sure it is not throwing water at you motor cover air intake louvers.

I may not be to late but I recommend using a plate of starboard or Corrianne and mount that to the boat and then if you buy a different model or need to relocate up higher it does not matter how many holes you drill there will always only be the original ones in the boat to hold the plate on.
