Bank fishing or boating around?
Me & the ole lady has found a small pond (48 acres) that we know nothn about at all.
I know it has crappie in it (black only) I caught 1 & only 1 other day on a 1/80th jig tipped wif nite crawler, but ive been back 3 times & not 1 single crappie. Was paper thin tho.
What im needing to know is what should i use as bait.Theres no where w/in a hr drive 1 way to get minnows,so no minnows for me.
What would you recommend I buy to try to catch more of these what to appears to be stunted crappies?
Bank fishing or boating around?
sry ranger...I have been bank fishin what few times i have been there.
It has a ramp but i dont think I can get my jon boat unloaded w/out gettin stuck (its just a dirt/mud ramp.
Im looking to buy a paddle boat for this 1 pond....so ill be doing both bank & boat fishing hopefully there but its bank for now.
It also has plenty of small stumps just under the water all around the banks & serveral big trees laying out in it,,,but so far im not doing much good around the trees or stumps.
If minnows aren't available commercially & you can't catch them locally, try the various jigs/plastics you see discussed on this board. I'd start with the 2" Bobby Garland baby shad in two colors: Blue Ice and Cajun Cricket. In addition to the artificial body, also try a small jig with a strip of cut bait.
Fishing since '50!
try ya some crickets also wouldn't be a bad idea to get ya a minnow trap and catch some in the deep holes in nearby creeks
Sure i can....i have set out 4 traps plenty of time baited wif bread....but seems all im catchin is big creek chubs...i havent seen noone on here in the past 2 yrs i been here usin creek chubs....so i just turnem back loose..i been tryin to catch smaller minnows wif no luck.....
I will order the bobby garlands shads...i do hear you boys talkin alot about them..thanks corker for your help!!!!
Get you any local worms, bugz, terrestrials, native to the area, Try deep and/or shaded possibly. What about flippin a small jig with soft tail?

I caught the 1 & only 1 wif a jig tipped wif a crawler..I bought tons of jigs recently & will try to active them alittle more Jeff....Im just new to jigs.
I got me 5 dozen of crawlers & 2 plano boxes of jigs ready & will try them tomorrow.
Also I am using a slip float system....should I take the float off & try cast & retrieve or should i continue the slip float system? The deepest that i know of is 12-14'.
Thanks for your help Jeff.
I found a contour map of the pond few weeks back.but dummy me didnt sabe it
Its in the town if anyone can find the map i seen....Saint Paul, VA 24283

I suggest you try an Acid Rain or John Deere Green 2 inch curly tail grub on a 1/32 oz. jig head. Southern Pro (and several others) make both soft bodies). These are my go to jigs.
Don't outsmart your common sense!
